Topic: Hash cookie

Hash cookie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hash cookies, Space Cookie, hash cakes or space cakes are relatively common in regions with liberal drugs policies, including much of Europe (particularly the Netherlands).
Hash cookies are essentially the same as marijuana cookies, and are also seen in cake, ball, and brownie form.
To make them, large amounts of hash (typically half a gram to as much as a gram a cookie) are baked into the product in careful steps, so that the user is able to achieve a high without actually smoking anything.

Hashish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hash is made from tetrahydrocannabinol-rich glandular hairs known as trichomes, as well as varying amounts of Cannabis flower and leaf fragments.
Finger hash is produced by rolling the ripe flowers of the plant between the fingers, a highly labor intensive process which produces spherical balls of resin.
The hash must be very thin to expose a maximum surface area, if not the tobacco will burn faster and the column of hash will remain sticking out the end of the joint, as the centre is left unburnt.

Cookies used for strong authentication must be either confined to a single host, or to a more restrictive wildcard like '.secure.acme.com'.
Local cookies are used to the identify user and issue URL credentials during a redirect across the domain, where the URL credentials are used to identify/authenticate the user again in order to issue cookies within the *new* domain.
An adversary who manages to steal either the cleartext or the 40-bit cookie cannot use it to acquire 128-bit level resources, because the cookies themselves have unforgeable assertions of security level which are checked during session authentication as described in the next section.

The longevity of the cookie may be controlled: for example you may specify that the cookie is valid only for the duration of the current user session.
Validation works exactly the same for authentication cookies as it does for view state: the element's validationKey is appended to the cookie, the resulting value is hashed, and the hash is appended to the cookie.
When the cookie is returned in a request, ASP.Net verifies that it wasn't tampered with by rehashing the cookie and comparing the new hash to the one accompanying the cookie.

 threshold state: textpattern cookie weakness
Guessing the hashed value itself is unreasonably difficult; but, since the hash function is known, the attacker can attempt to guess the cleartext values that are passed to the hash function.
Since the cookie hash is not dependent on the user’s password, a stolen or forged cookie will continue to work even if the password is reset.
The solution is to ensure that cookie hashes include a value that is (1) unique to each user, (2) unknown to the attacker, and (3) available to the Textpattern code.

If the cookie specifies an expiration date in the future, the browser will store the cookie information in a disk file and return it to the server every time the user reconnects (until the expiration date is reached).
For example, if you specify the path "/cgi-bin", then the cookie will be returned to each of the scripts "/cgi-bin/tally.pl", "/cgi-bin/order.pl", and "/cgi-bin/customer_service/complain.pl", but not to the script "/cgi-private/site_admin.pl".
If you are trying to retrieve a cookie set by a foreign server, this escaping method may trip you up.

Alice B. Toklas brownie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sweet cake or cookie containing cannabis, like a hash cookie, is variously known as an Alice B. Toklas brownie, bud brownie, magic brownie, hash brownie, or special brownie.
Eating such a brownie can result in a similar psychoactive effect or "high" as smoking marijuana, although it may be delayed or mitigated due to slower absorption of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) through the digestive tract.
Other terms for an Alice B. Toklas brownie include "bud brownie", "space cake", "pot pie", "Scooby Snack", "hash brownie", "special brownie", or "magic brownie".

UBB.threads Support Community: More flexible authentication
I should be able to modify w3t::authenticate to fetch my old cookies, authenticate in the old scheme, and then use the user_id_number from the old scheme to fetch any needed data from the w3t_Users table by matching to U_Number (assuming I keep this coordinated).
In this particular example this may have been motivated by efficiency concerns since the cookie hash was already constructed for the purpose of fetching the "visit" cookie and Scream may not have wanted to waste CPU cycles parsing HTTP_COOKIES to create the hash again inside of w3t::authenticate.
If the cookie hash is already constructed for some other reason before calling w3t::authenticate, pass the hash reference in, otherwise pass in 'undef.' Thus extraction of the password from the cookies hash can be completely localized inside of w3t::authenticate which removes the need to edit many different files to accomodate different authentication schemes.

A cookie is a named piece of data (string) maintained by the browser that is sent to the server with every page request.
Cookie names are not unique as you can have multiple paths associated with a name.
Your server can ask for the cookie(s) and use it to associate that person with a larger chunk of data (such as their preferences, credit card,...) in a database or wherever.

Discuss Dynamic HTML : Password hash algorithm
Does anyone have an easy to use hashing algorithm that we can use to encrypt the password before saving it in the cookie and then later decrypt.
A sufficiently good hashing algorithm with a large, prime number mask will provide good dispersion of hash values so someone could not happen upon another password that hashes to the same value.
I am less concerned about someone copying a cookie and masquarading as another user (the likelihood is of this is pretty low).

A consistent hash or something that has the properties of a consistent hash (without using the consistent hash algorithm) should be used for URL hash based scheduling so when servers are added and removed the caches stay as"hot"as possible.
When cookie scheduling is used, no state table needs to be maintained because the system uses an approach that keeps server mapping on the client side.
This additional cookie has the same expiration time as the session identifier so persistence will be maintained as long as the session is maintained.

Protect your Apache server from cookie theft   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
To briefly recap, the role of the cookie in server-client interactions is simple: It’s a clear-text transmission of transaction state information stored on the client machine to create a static state record for an otherwise stateless transaction (HTTP being a stateless protocol).
One is the persistent cookie, or a cookie stored on the client machine’s hard drive (and therefore accessible to an intruder via the client machine’s network).
When a user clicks on such a link, he or she activates a machine’s browser and the masked URL sends the user to the site (establishing a cookie), then bounces the session to the intruder (dropping the cookie off in the process), whereupon it is bounced back to the original server.

Using CGI.pm for cookies - Dev Shed
I suggest using Digest::MD5's md5_hex() method (don't use md5)base64() because it includes characters that could break a cookie) to hash some random info (like localtime() and some random text) and use that as your session id. These types of ids would be VERY hard to crack, if it's even practically possible.
I'm not setting and retrieving the cookie at the same time, so that cannot be the error.
When I try to retrieve the cookie after it shoud be set, I just use cookie(user) to get it, but it worked once, so I think its right.

Security Forums :: View topic - "Cookie" can the hash be cracked?
In all honesty, the hash function will be the lesser worry; insanely poor password and passphrase choosing values, equally-as-poor password-to-cryptographic-key derivation, and lax storage methodologies will pose much more realistic threats.
Being responsible is addressing each of these issues equally, and making sure a sufficient hash function is sitting in the middle; by sufficient, we mean a structure that is cryptographically secure, that produces an output of at least 256 bits.
But normally if you have the Cookie hash, you won't bother trying to crack it, just use the hash to generate a valid Cookie for the website, then you have the same access as the user whos details you have.

As I said, the details of the cookie algorithm aren't important to me per se; they could be static cookies negotiated by IKE, renegotiated by IKE, or follow some sequence as you suggest.
Further, the cookie space can be larger than the IP address/port pair, because it is decoupled from them.
Unless the 'permitted peer' traffic is filtered based on IP addresses and ports, at which point that's a cookie filter that works only for off-path attacks.
