According to official fishery statistics from Gifu Prefecture, the amount of Eriocheir caught in 1998 was 0.8 ton, a sharp drop from the almost 1.5 tons caught in 1996.
The hotels in Gifu City, which are located along the banks of the Nagara River, have been forced, one by one, into closure (note 3).

The Chita peninsula district in Aichi prefecture has begun receiving a supply of domestic water from the barrage.
Before the construction of Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage, the drawing of river water for drinking water on the downstream side of the river from the mound was difficult because the river was contaminated with saltwater, but since the barrage began operations, a stable supply of water was virtually assured.
In particular, the Kita-Ise industrial water district could not draw water from the river prior to the barrage's construction, and had to build a second water drawing facility further upstream.
