The population of Haskell County steadily declined after the 1930s, to 13,736 in 1950, 11,174 in 1960, 8,512 in 1970, 7,725 in 1980, and 6,820 in 1990.
Haskell, the county seat and largest town (1990 population, 3,362), remains a farm trading center and maintains the county hospital.

According to the District Attorney down to county leaders, the monument in question contains on one side, the Ten Commandments and the religious content they are referring to, and on the other side, the Mayflower Compact, which may be the historical context the Supreme Court had referred to in its earlier ruling.
