The Haskell Free Library and Opera House was opened in June 1904 by Martha Stewart Haskell and her son Horace, as a gift to enrich the communities of Stanstead, Quebec, and Derby Line, Vermont.
Other elements worth noting in the Opera House are the moulded plaster decorative elements in the balcony front and the proscenium arch, the mural paintings flanking the stage, and the original wooden folding chairs for the audience.

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, built deliberately on the boundary line separating Canada from the U.S., was the gift of philanthropists Martha Haskell and her son Horace Stewart Haskell, to the communities of Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec.
The Opera House is especially proud of its collection of original curtains, sets, and props, designed and painted by Boston scenery painter Erwin LaMoss in 1902, and the last of his works known to survive.
The Haskell Archives are a rich repository of historical documentation relating to the institution, the Haskell family, and the local communities.

The Haskell Opera House, a lovely horse-and-buggy-days performing arts center, was closed to the public by the trustees until it could be retrofitted to meet 21st Century fire, safety, and handicapped accessible requirements of two countries, a province, and a state.
The building, a scaled-down version of the old Boston Opera House (long since disappeared) was donated to the residents of Derby Line and Rock Island and Stanstead, Quebec, by Martha Stewart Haskell and her son, Horace, in memory of Carlos Haskell, husband and father.
The library, which is at street level, was closed to large tour groups -- a move which led to some friction between the trustees and the tour guide and town councillors who were backing her.
