It was this crossing of two railroads that resulted in the rapid growth of the town, and in 1873, when the "Hastings Journal" was established, it immediately advocated that the county seat be moved to "the new town." This precipitated a fight that continued until a vote was called in 1877.
Hastings College was established in 1882 by Alexander, Wigton, and Heartwell under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church.
Hastings was declared a critical housing area as 6,000 military men and 3,000 families arrived.

Hastings is situated where the sandstone beds, at the heart of the Weald, known geologically as the Hastings Sands, meet the English Channel, forming tall cliffs to the east of the town.
Hastings was a borough by 1086, and gave its name to the Rape of Hastings, one of the six Rapes or administrative districts of Sussex.
County borough status was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974, and it became a district within the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex.

Hastings AMEN, a project funded in part by Dakota County, pairs adult mentors, who have completed faith-based mentorship training, with ''at-risk'' youths.
Volunteer mentors in the nondenominational program are members of churches in the Hastings area who commit to spending one to three hours a week with a youth for a year.
Hastings AMEN puts mentors through three hours of faith based training, three hours of mentor training, then another six hour weekend session.'' says Scalze.
