Keith, a Massachusetts Republican who served in Congress from 1958 until 1973, died of pneumonia at a nursing home on Tuesday in his hometown of Brockton, his family said.
Keith was the second of five children, and his father served briefly as mayor of Brockton.
Keith is survived by his wife, Barbara Clapp Keith of Bourne; another daughter, Helen Harriman Keith of Burlington, Vt.; three grandchildren; and a brother.

Keith won election in 1958 to the House of Representatives from the 12th district, which then encompassed the Cape and south coastal areas such as New Bedford.
Keith was credited with helping save the cranberry industry in the early 1960s, when a cancer scare over chemicals used then to grow cranberries caused the dumping of crops.
Keith was also credited with bringing millions in federal funding to the New Bedford area, for housing, education, the fishing industry, and other initiatives.

Hastings Keith, 89, a retired Republican congressman who represented the 12th District of Massachusetts for seven terms and who launched a post-retirement crusade to restructure the federal pension system, died July 19 of pneumonia at the Guardian Center, a nursing home in Brockton, Mass.
Hastings Keith was born in Brockton and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1938.
Keith's congressional district produced about half the nation's cranberries at the time, so to prove that the berries were safe, he and his family drank nothing but cranberry juice for weeks.

The Hastings Keith Federal Building on North Sixth Street, recognizable by the "Seaflower" sculpture in front of the building, is home to many government offices such as Social Security, the IRS, FDA and others.
A ceremony yesterday was attended by state and local officials to officially mark the completion of the building's expansion and renovation.
Keith, the man the building is named after, led the delegation in the Pledge of Allegiance and the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
