Hastings College of the Law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was founded in 1878 by Serranus Clinton Hastings, the first Chief Justice of California, as the first law school of the University of California (UC), and it remains affiliated with the University of California today.
UC Hastings is also the first and oldest law school in California, and one of the few university-affiliated law schools in the United States which does not sit on a general university campus.
When he gave $100,000 to UC to start the law school named after him, Justice Hastings imposed two conditions: (1) the school must be in San Francisco near the courts, and (2) it could not be governed by the Regents of the University of California.

Top-Law-Schools: UC Hastings Law School   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Hastings Law School is a part of the University of California system and was actually its first established law department; however, it does not have an undergraduate counterpart as do all other law schools under the UC system.
As with other law schools, applicants who do not fall into the "auto-admit" or "auto-reject" piles based solely on their numerical index are judged on other factors, including letters of recommendation, personal essays, undergraduate major and undergraduate school.
An upside to taking classes at Hastings Law School is in the fact that its board is separate from the rest of the UC system and therefore registering for classes is a simple, smooth and easy process, something that is not the case at other UC law schools.

Debate on marriage at Hastings law school / Legal scholars split on underlying issues of parenting, privacy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Legal scholars and advocates debated same-sex marriage before a law school audience Friday, arguing over the purpose of marriage, whether gay and lesbian couples are comparable to polygamists, and whether a federal constitutional amendment would respect or trample states' authority.
At Hastings, partisans in the legal fight that emerged from that decision staked out their positions on whether the state law violates the California Constitution's broad but vaguely defined right to privacy or its prohibitions against discrimination by gender or sexual orientation.
Hastings Law Professor Vikram Amar asked whether the argument that marriage is for procreation would justify a state law banning women over 70 from marrying.

No. 01-332 - Board of Education v. Earls - Brief Amicus Curiae of Professors Akhil Reed Amar and Vikram Amar
Acton, 515 U.S. this Court rejected a challenge to a school drug-testing policy that randomly tested athletes, finding that the policy was "reasonable" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment given the government's justification, the relatively minimal incremental intrusion involved, and--perhaps most importantly--the common sense fit between the government's means and ends.
Where a law singles out for inferior treatment a distinct class of persons who are structurally disabled from protecting their interests in the legislative arenas, constitutional principles of equality often justify [*10] searching judicial review of government actions.
Deterrence is undoubtedly a laudable goal for a school board, but, like the general goal of "investigating crime" in Terry that would not justify a full-blown seizure, it cannot justify the substantial bodily intrusion the drug-testing imposes.

Stanford has one of the top law schools in the country, but its track record in hiring and retaining faculty of color has been a poor one and seems to be getting worse, according to participants in a law school forum last week.
Several notable minority faculty members were wooed to the law school, but some of them didn't stay long and didn't have happy experiences at Stanford, said Miguel Mendez, one of only two minority faculty out of 32 active tenured faculty.
For some reason, Brest said, law school faculty members seem to be more mobile than any other in higher education, with a lot of coming and going among top schools.

The Legal Reader: Federal Judge Hands Hastings Law School Victory In Lawsuit
A federal judge has rejected claims by a Christian student group that the University of California's Hastings College of Law must recognize it as a registered student group even though it discriminates based on religion and sexual orientation.
"(Hastings' policy) affects what CLS must do if it wants to become a registered student organization - not engage in discrimination - not what CLS may or may not say regarding its beliefs on non-orthodox Christianity or homosexuality,'' White wrote in his decision.
A number of similar lawsuits are pending against various other public universities throughout the nation, including the California State University system, so White's ruling, issued Monday, could have impact beyond at Hastings, according to the attorney for the school.
