 Midland Railway
A construction contract was let to the J. Ginly Company in the fall of 1869.
When the Canadian Pacific Railway, incorporated in 1880 to construct a transcontinental rail line, was searching for an existing network in southern Ontario to support and connect its disjointed system, rumours circulated in the railway world that the Midland Railway was being eyed to fulfill such a purpose.
History: The Toronto and Ottawa Railway (TandOR) project was originally incorporated in March 1874 as the Huron and Quebec Railway Company to construct a line from Goderich east to Toronto with branches extending out to Sarnia, Fergus, Elora and Guelph, where it would connect with the projected Ontario and Quebec Railway.

 Hastings East Hill Railway
Unlike some resorts that boast more than one funicular railway, at Hastings the two railways could not be more different despite the fact that they were both originally designed on the water-balance principle.
Today the railway continues to operate all year round, with return tickets available from the lower station.
This was cut into the face of the cliff, whereas the West Hill railway is largely hidden in a tunnel dug through the cliff.

 The Railway Station
The railway station was an area set aside for the train to "stand in", while the depot was the actual building in which passengers bought their tickets, or where freight was recieved or shipped from.
When ships no longer travelled on Okanagan Lake, and with Penticton growing more to the south, the Lakeshore Depot and station were closed, and all operations moved to the South Penticton station located on Hastings Ave., at Fairview Road.
The activity around the station was very important to the community, and to the railway.

People associated with Makotuku, Matamau & Kopua Railway Stations
At the time Mangatera station was Dannevirke's main railway station, and presumably the present Mangatera Hotel is the descendant of what was once the Matamau Hotel.
Matamau Station began life in 1884 as an unmanned shelter shed and for most of the latter part of 1884, the station was the Hawkes Bay line's railhead.
In November 1883 the flag station's shelter shed was noted as a place for the local wild pigs to dine on flour, sugar and other articles of food that had been consigned by train and left to await collection by the addressee.

 Hastings West Cliff Railway
Built by Messrs A H Holme and C W King of Liverpool (who subsequently built the Snowdon Mountain Railway), the railway was of a funicular type, comprising two parallel lengths of track running on a 1: 2.9 gradient, and rising some 170ft.
In common with most railways of this type, the two cars were joined by wire cables and controlled by winding gear situated in the upper station.
The seaside town of Hastings boasts two cliff railways, but the West Hill Railway is both the oldest working example of its type, and the most inconspicuous.
