Hatano Hideharu (波多野 秀治 Hatano Hideharu, 1541-June 25, 1579) is the eldest son of Hatano Harumichi and the head of Hatano clan.
Hatano clan had, from Hideharu's grandfather Hatano Tanemichi, a retainer of the powerful Miyoshi clan and Miyoshi Nagayoshi and Hideharu had been Miyoshi's retainer as well.
The Hatano clan, however, was situated in the pass of Oda Nobunaga to Kyoto and after several battles, Hideharu surrendered to Akechi Mitsuhide.

When Nobunaga went to war with the Môri clan, Mitsuhide was assigned to lead the Oda contingent that would be marching along the northern coast of the Chugoku arm.
In 1578 an unfortunate incident is said to have occurred involving the Hatano clan of Tamba.
The Hatano responded, as one might expect, by accusing Mitsuhide of treachery, and, the story goes, somehow got ahold of his mother in Ô,mi and executed her in dreadful manner.

During Oda's campaign against Chugoku region, Mitsuhide was ordered to subjugate the Tamba and Tango provinces, where he clashed with the Hatano (波多野) and the Isshiki (一色) clans.
It is said that when Tamba was taken, Mitsuhide convinced the Hatano daimyo, Hatano Hideharu (波多野晴通), to submit so that his life could be spared.
