  History home
Hatcham is first noted in the Doomsday Book of 1086 where Haecci’s homestead is recorded as having 11 households, some pigs, cattle and crops.
But New Cross was not Hatcham and the manor of Hatcham kept its steady agricultural ways for many years supplying the growing population of London with market produce.
By the 1860s majority of the land on the north side of A2 was under development and the large houses, such as Hatcham Park, which previously sat amongst the fields, were demolished.

It created a boys' school at Hoxton, which then split into schools at Hatcham in south London and Hampstead in north London; the Hampstead school moved in 1961 to become the Haberdashers' Aske's School, Elstree.
The Hatcham school now admits girls as well as boys; a separate girls' school was founded at Acton but has now moved to be close to the Elstree school.
Other Haberdashers' schools are situated elsewhere in the U.K., for example Adams' Grammar School in Newport, Shropshire.

Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 19th century it was divided into two, one part moving to Hatcham in South London, where a boys' and a girls' school were set up.
Usually referred to as Aske's, they were formally known as the Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham Schools until 1991, when the two were combined as Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College.
The other part moved to a site in Hampstead, north London, becoming a direct grant school after the passing of the Education Act 1944.

Hatcham Park was originally the residence of Joseph Hardcastle, born in Leeds on 7th December 1752, who purchased Hatcham Park House in 1788.
Hatcham House was at all times open to men of description and to the close of his life, the hospitality which he, Joseph Hardcastle, delighted to maintain, made the name of Hatcham familiar to Christians of every denomination, not only throughout the Empire but also in America and on the Continent.
With the consent of the Bishop of Rochester and the consent of the vicar of All Saints Hatcham Park and Christ Church Camberwell (The Rev, H.LHolland and the Rev, O.T.Thorpe) the Corpus Christi Mission was assigned as a sphere of work.

The New Cross Turnpike Trust was formed in 1718 with a toll gate adjacent to the New Cross House Inn at Clifton Rise, New Cross, and is mentioned by Daniel Defoe in his diary of 1724.
It would have been at this point that travellers might well have started to refer to Hatcham as "the New Cross gate" although the village, rapidly becoming a surburb of London, clung steadfastly onto its proper name of Hatcham.
Notwithstanding that, when the toll gates were abolished in 1865 the area might well have reverted to being Hatcham if it had not been for the railways.

Hatcham Wood Action Group chairman Mike Suter said the issue had been overlooked by the council as 57 per cent of pupils are on the special needs register and no other school is properly equipped for the children.
He said the Council was acting under pressure from the Government after two other Lewisham schools were also condemned by OFSTED inspectors.

Pepy’s cousin; variously referred to as ‘cousin’, ‘the Executor’ and ‘Hatcham Pepys’.
The diary makes it clear that he was a puritan (probably a Presbyterian), and it is therefore virtually certain that he was the Thomas Pepys who served as a magistrate for Middlesex and as a commissioner for the assessment and the militia in the late ’50s.
He was living in 1661 in St-Martin-in-the-Fields, later in Newport St, Covent Garden, whence in 1663 he moved to Hatcham, Surrey.

This area used to be known as Hatcham, an Anglo-Saxon name, meaning “Hacci's village”, or possibly “the village in the clearing in the woods”.
The ancient road from London to Dover and Canterbury runs through the area, and in the 18th century travellers using the road had to pay tolls at the turnpike gates.
The gate at Hatcham was called New Cross Gate, after the New Cross Inn which stood nearby, and gradually the area became known as New Cross rather than Hatcham.
