Hatful Of Hollow is the first of these, a 1984 collection released to tide over fans between the Smiths’ eponymous debut and the 1985 follow-up Meat Is Murder.
Hatful Of Hollow is a collection of tunes that draws from the band’s previous singles, album cuts, and several songs taken from BBC radio sessions recorded specifically for air on the government sanctioned and operated BBC radio system.
Hatful Of Hollow opens on a high note with the lush, jangly guitars, bouncy rhythm and vibrant production on William, It Was Really Nothing, accompanied by a more laidback Morrissey delivering his lyrics at a fast pace to keep up with the bouncing rhythm of the drum and bass.

Hatful of Hollow is a compilation album by The Smiths that features BBC Radio 1 studio recordings and two contemporary singles with their B-sides.
The current sleeve for Hatful of Hollow is the 1987 re-issue sleeve, featuring a photograph of the otherwise unknown Fabrice Colette taken by Gilles Decroix.
Originally, the picture was larger and showed a tattoo of a Cocteau drawing on his left shoulder, which he had had done in June 1983 because he idolised Cocteau.

While several cuts on Hatful of Hollow are BBC versions of songs from The Smiths, the versions on the compilation are nervy and raw -- and they're also not the selling point of the record.

 Hatful of Hollow Music
Fronted by the fey, sexually ambiguous Steven Patrick Morrissey, who married painfully honest lyrics--almost embarrassing in their self-effacement--with arch humor and a melancholic delivery, the British band was quite an anomaly to an America still emerging from the bloated-rock tyranny of the likes of Journey and REO Speedwagon.
Hatful of Hollow, released as an import in 1984 and domestically in 1993, is a collection of singles, many recorded live for various radio shows.
Released late in 1984, Hatful of Hollow was a compilation of songs left of their first album.

 The Smiths: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
The sameness tends to bury some of the less memorable tracks, particularly in the second half of the album, but Hatful of Hollow is generally filled with gems.
Given the existence of Hatful of Hollow, this compilation would make more sense if had been recast to include the group’s final b-sides, the Cilla Black cover ‘Work Is A Four Letter Word’ and fan favourite ‘I Keep Mine Hidden’, as well as a couple of 1983 b-sides also unavailable on CD.
Among the material not previously from Hatful of Hollow, there is some obvious filler, unsurprising for b-sides; most noticeably the Twinkle cover ‘Golden Lights’ and the instrumental ‘Oscillate Wildly’.

Critical Discography - Hatful Of Hollow
Similar in style to Elvis Costello's vital 'Ten Bloody Marys' compilation, 'Hatful Of Hollow' is a golden hour of The Smiths, spasmodically spanning a period of 18 months from their early John Peel and David Jensen broadcasts up to their most recent single 'William, It Was Really Nothing'.
At last gathered together on vinyl where they truly belonged are these very same songs plus the last two singles and B-sides, and it's the perfect stop gap/document depending on your predilection for the Smiths.
The LP is a collection of Radio 1 sessions The Smiths recorded for John Peel and David Jensen (forgive him, Lord), four sessions in all that, at the last count, have been transmitted 12 times, according to the rather nicely-written biog included here for the benefit of ignorant hacks.

Fast Forward : What we're gonna do right here is go back. Way back.
Hatful of Hollow, a collection of non-LP singles, B-sides, and John Peel BBC sessions, established a questionable tradition of repackaging Smiths material ad infinitum; however, this first compilation proved to be their most enduring, as well as being one of the classic indie-rock albums of all time.
Although Hatful of Hollow followed their dark, dense, self-titled debut, and preceded the brilliant Meat is Murder, the band's second "studio" album, its minimal production, lo-fi aesthetic and nonstop barrage of incredible songs truly captures the delicate intensity and impact of the band better than any of their prior or subsequent studio albums.
The success of The Smiths spawned a multitude of similar bands such as James and the Trash Can Sinatras, but ultimately led to a change in the landscape of indie rock in general.

Indeed, along with "Hand in Glove" (a better version appears on Hatful of Hollow but there isn't too big a difference) these two are really the only true "pop" songs on what is a very indie album.
That aside, the album benefits from the strength of the songs, "Hand in glove", "Reel around the fountain" and "I don't owe you anything" the stand-out tracks.
If you really want to hear The Smiths' early carnation as they should have sounded then get "Hatful of hollow" instead.

Like the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper," every track is a hit on this musical masterpiece.
Sure, many of the songs are in collection CDs, but this original release is the 90s equivalent of "Disraeli Gears" by Cream --- these songs should be enjoyed in the sequence laid out in HATFUL OF HOLLOW.
My personal favorite is "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," with unforgettable lyrics like "I was looking for a job, and then I found a job, and heaven knows I'm miserable now." Morrissey discloses in these songs the secrets we wish we could blurt out, but bury.
