The remote Helen Reef, "the reef of the giant clam," is the traditional fishing grounds of the southern most island in Palau's territorial waters, Hatohobei Atoll, and contains some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet.
Hatohobei and Helen Reef sit closer to Indonesia than they do to Koror, the capital of Palau some 600 kilometers to the north.
The people of Hatohobei have been protecting the 262 square kilometer Helen Reef as a conservation area over the last three years, stopping both local and foreign harvesting of resources for commercial purposes.

 GCRA Activities in May and June
This tiny island, about 150 m long and less than 50 m wide, is the only land on the largest atoll in Palau, which has been documented to be the richest reef in the Pacific in terms of diversity of corals, fish, and other forms of marine life.
Therefore Hatohobei State Governor Sabino Sackarias has requested help from GCRA to stabilize the island, restore the reefs and fisheries, and look into the prospect of creating a new artificial island near the main tidal channel.
It took us four years to find funding for a pilot project, and since stabilizing the island was the first priority, the pilot project focused on constructing a breakwater, the longest such yet built in the world using this technology.

The boat continued on to Hatohobei and on to Helen's Reef spending three days before returning back stopping on each island to pick up passengers going back to Koror.
Her primary duties are to monitor operation of the schools, train and assist teachers and assist in teaching courses in Sonsorol State and Hatohobei State.

I am now the deputy manager of this project which serves my home island of Hatohobei, in the Southwest Islands of Palau.

The following report covers areas and languages that I have researched and endangered languages covered by field studies carried out by Japanese researchers.
According to Belau (Palau) government statistics (1990), the total population of 15,122 people includes 61 people living on outlying islands in Sonsorol State, and 33 in Hatohobei (Tochobei) State.
In addition to the Hatohobei language, the language mix on these outlying islands also includes nuclear Micronesian (Chuukic) languages, which are the core Oceanian languages spoken in the Carolines.
