Hatsuyume (初夢) is the Japanese word for the first dream had in the new year.
In Japan, the night of December 31 was often passed without sleeping, thus the hatsuyume was often the dream seen the night of January 1.
It is considered to be particularly good luck to dream of Mount Fuji, a hawk, and an eggplant.

Thank you for telling us about hatsuyume, Emmy! It's interesting to hear about this little bit of folklore! Unfortunately, it's too late for me to remember what my hatsuyume was...I hope it was propitious!!
BTW, in Japan, we believe that there are three good/lucky dreams to have as hatsuyume.
The real hatsuyume is a dream you have on the second of January.

Not being Japanese, I can't help but feel just a bit weird as I reach out for some Japanese concept to make some point.
