Hatteras sailed for Key West on 5 November 1861, arriving there 13 November to join the 'South Atlantic Blockading 'Squadron which was destined to choke off the South's economic lifeline.
However, Hatteras illustrious blockading career was cut short in early 1863 not long after she was ordered to joint the squadron under Real Admiral David Farragut, who was attempting to retake the key Texas port of Gal-veston.
Of Hatteras' crew of 126, 2 had been killed and 5 wounded; 6 had escaped back to the squadron in the boat originally sent out to board and investigate "HBMS Spitfire;" and the remainder, including Captain Blake, were taken to Port Royal, Jamaica, and from there paroled back to the United States.

In 1803, the first Cape Hatteras lighthouse was built but that light had a less than good reputation and many mariners complained that they never even saw it when passing the area.
Difficulties started before the materials even got to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and several ships were wrecked in gales within view of the construction site resulting in a loss of over 150,000 bricks.
The task of moving the Cape Hatteras lighthouse seemed the only solution and after lots of debate and controversy it was moved to its present location about 3,000 feet from where it once stood along with the keepers house and oil house.

In fact, most of the dunes along Hatteras Island and up to Oregon Inlet are not natural dunes -- they were actually pushed up there in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps to presage economic development.
CD: I would imagine a lot of people on Hatteras Island would be raising hell about that possibility because they like the convenience of being able to jaunt back and forth so easily.
The immediate impacts of that would probably be to reduce the tourist flow volume to Hatteras Island, and many of the economic interests on Hatteras Island would not be in favor of reducing the total flow of people.

On the 28th, while the navy bombarded Forts Clark and Hatteras, Union troops came ashore and attacked the rear of the Confederate batteries.
This movement was part of Union efforts to seize coastal enclaves from which to enforce the blockade.
