Hatter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The origin of the proverbial expression "mad as a hatter" is uncertain.
Mercury poisoning suffered by many hatters in the 18th century and 19th century, when mercury was used in the manufacture of felt.
Lewis Carroll used the phrase for the character of The Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Language (Mad As a Hatter)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Phrases such as mad as a March hare, mad as a buck, mad as Maybutter, and mad as a wet hen are older than mad as a hatter, leaving open the conclusion that hatter is but a variation of an existing term.
Carter was neither a hat maker nor had been exposed through his work to mercury fumes — if he had indeed been Carroll's inspiration for the "Mad Hatter" of Alice, it would have been because he was a somewhat nutty real-life character much given to the wearing of highly noticeable hats.
His Mad Hatter could therefore be a caricature of Theophilus Carter, a real person of his acquaintance, while his mad as a hatter could have been a twist on the pre-existing saying, mad as a March hare.

 Mad as a hatter
The circumstantial evidence is rather against the millinery origin though and, beyond the fact that hatters often suffered trembling fits, there's little to link hat making to the coining of 'as mad as a hatter'.
His 'Hatter' character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) is of course the best-known mad hatter of them all.
The Hatter is not actually described as mad in the story - merely a participant at 'a mad tea-party'; although he can hardly be called sane.

Hatter Madigan is wracked with guilt and shame over having lost Alyss in the Pool of Tears after her mother had elicited what amounted to a deathbed promise that he would keep her daughter safe and make certain that she someday return to Wonderland to rule.
For instance-the characters we know as the White Rabbit, the Red Queen, the Cheshire Cat and of course, the Mad Hatter all appear in "The Looking Glass Wars" as they were intended to by Alyss when she told Carroll her harrowing tale.
Additonally, "Hatter M" just seemed like a necessary, organic progression from all of the work I did with artists on "The Looking Glass Wars." In "LGW Book 1," Hatter M was introduced but his story was only explored for about four chapters.

The Hatter was the only one who got any advantage from the change: and Alice was a good deal worse off than before, as the March Hare had just upset the milk-jug into his plate.
Then she went to work nibbling at the mushroom (she had kept a piece of it in her pocket) till she was about a foot high: then she walked down the little passage: and then--she found herself at last in the beautiful garden, among the bright flower-beds and the cool fountains.
