A to Z of TV For many Briton's throughout the 1960's Hattie Jacques represented the quintessential figure of female authority through her portrayals of a policewoman, teacher and most famously the starch-ridden matron in the "Carry On" series of films.
However, the truth of the matter is that Hattie Jacques was a consummate professional, much loved by those that worked with her, as well as being a continual source of comfort to her fellow professionals who at times would need a confidante or a friend to lend moral support.
Hattie Jacques was born in Sandgate, Kent, in 1924, and trained as a hairdresser before the Second World War during which time she worked first as a nurse and then as an arc-welder at a North London factory.

Instead of sex, Jacques would have to learn to reconcile herself to a career of put-downs from Bernard Bresslaw and his ilk.
As Monkhouse noted, in Sykes she had to create a role for herself; Sykes's scripts only offered a foil for the funny man. Nonetheless, she was still the sex-starved loser: in one scene from Sykes he spotted a lonely hearts ad with a familiar phone number.
The home-movie footage of her new lover showed him to be a hunk - in winter, square-shouldered and granite-jawed in a camel coat; in summer, a Greek god striding through the surf in negligible trunk.

Jacques is one of the many names that the Normans brought with them when they conquered England in 1066.
In continental Europe, the most ancient recorded family crest was discovered upon the monumental effigy of a Count of Wasserburg in the church of St. Emeran, at Ratisobon, Germany...
In the Jacques coat of arms as in all coat of arms the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Sykes And A...
In these 60 episodes Eric played 'Eric', a gaunt, accident-prone, eternal child, and Hattie played 'Hattie' (often shortened to 'Hat'), a likeable soul who tended to view the world with wonderment, and put up with Eric's exuberance and erratic behaviour because, improbably, he was her twin brother.
Both characters were unmarried (and rarely seemed to work) and the episodes were set in a house they shared at 24 Sebastopol Terrace in East Acton (an area of west London near to the equally fictitious Steptoe And Son yard).
Hattie Jacques gave marvellous support throughout as his coy and (comparatively) timid sister - her character was completely opposite to the dragon-like roles normally associated with large women in TV comedy at this time, a la Peggy Mount - and Richard Wattis gave sterling support as their snobbish neighbour Mr Brown.

The highlight of the series, apart from the sharp and well-observed comedic routines, was the perfect combination of Sykes and comedy actress Hattie Jacques (as his spinster sister) both of whom forged a relationship so convincing that a large section the viewing public thought that they really were siblings.
Eric and writer Johnny Speight originally devised the series, although it was Eric's idea to have Jacques play his sister rather than his wife in order to break the mould of the usual domestic sitcom scenario.
A number of guest stars appeared in the series from time to time such as Joan Simms and Les Dawson, but by and large it was the magic combination of Sykes and Jacques that kept the series flying, even if by the end of its run it was beginning to look a little dated.

The plot, if I may use such a term, is an early usage of the familiar Brit-com staple, the dodgy Spanish holiday resort with a half-finished hotel and an unpredictable climate.
Needless to say, it all goes horribly wrong, since the establishment is unfinished, with no glass in the sliding doors, shared bathrooms and furnishings, which are liable to collapse at a moment’s notice.
Jacques and Butterworth are wonderful in this movie, with the latter running about as if in Feydeau farce as he tries to keep the hotel from collapsing around him and the delightful Hattie swearing in broken English while pouring meths over her impotent oven.

The setting was still Sebastopol Terrace (albeit now two doors along, at number 28, in an end-of-terrace house) and Eric and Hattie also remained as they were before: innocents in a scheming world, he the accident-prone, foolish boy who will never grew up, she the wide-eyed, less knowing but remarkably patient sister-cum-mother-figure.
The best years in this revival were the early ones, though; latter episodes were not very good, and the series came to an enforced conclusion after the 1979 run following the death on 6 October 1980 of the marvellous Hattie Jacques, aged a mere 58.
(Her life and career were celebrated in The Unforgettable Hattie Jacques, screened by ITV on 21 January 2000, in the same channel's Legends series on 31 July 2001, and in a C4 Heroes Of Comedy biography on 9 March 2002.)
