Experiencing Unfreedom   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
As the elected magistrates of Hauenstein, a lordship in the southeastern extremity of Outer Austria, a province subject to Habsburg emperor in Vienna, the canton masters were responsible for collecting public taxes, administering the Hauenstein's judicial system, and representing the interests of their constituents, free as well as unfree, before the provincial assembly of estates.
The Hauensteiners’ talk of “Bohemian serfdom” (“böhmische Leibeigenschaft”) reflected this tendency to equate serfdom with slavery, an association that dominated both popular and enlightened discourses on personal unfreedom in central Europe until the dissolutions of serfdom in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
Hauensteiners did not describe personal freedom as a natural right but as a corporate privilege and were not averse to assuming powers of servile lordship over others when the opportunity arose.
