As intended, the charity coal house on the village green served to distribute coal to the poor of the parish.
The Haughley parish boundary covers a large area with Tot Hill to the south, Haughley Green to the north and New Street to the west.
This stood at 762 in the 1066 Doomsday census, 916 in the 1841 census and 1554 in the 1991 census.

Haughley (pronounced Horley), is said by many to be one of the prettiest villages in Suffolk.
The large attractive green remains at the heart of the village and is surrounded by a delightful variety of cottages, some thatched, and all painted in traditional Suffolk pastel shades.
Haughley boasts a public house, a restaurant, a bakery (which was established over a hundred years ago), a Post Office (the oldest in Suffolk, and possibly the oldest in the country), a general foodstore, a hairdressing salon, a second hand furniture shop, a children's clothing shop, a picture framing shop, a vet and several farms.

The Haughley Experiment was the first scientific comparative study of organic farming and conventional chemical-based farming, started in 1939 by Lady Eve Balfour and Alice Debenham, on two adjoining farms in Haughley Green, Suffolk, England.
In the words of Lady Eve, from her address to the IFOAM conference in Switzerland, in 1977[1]:
"[The Haughley Experiment] was started in 1939 on my farm and taken over by the Soil Association in 1947 which for the next 25 years directed and sponsored it.

Its listed after Newbells farm and Wassicks Farm in Haughley Green (I grew up there - hence the intrigue - were those fields I trampled as a child the same fields as my forefathers?) If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
I only know of one son Daniel Green, my G Grandfather, (B Felsham 1831) He later was a shoemaker in Haughley.

The £32m safety improvement scheme will realign the main carriageway of the A14 between Haughley New Street and Stowmarket, and provide a new two-level junction to provide safer access to the A14 from the villages of Haughley, Haughley New Street and Harleston.
The announcement of the preferred route for the A14 Haughley Bends was made on 15 March 2004 (press notice EHA36/04 of 15 March 2005 refers).

Birse and their design agents, Mouchel Parkman, will be working on the design and of the scheme along with the HA and their consultants WSP Ltd to take it through to the construction stage.
