Amazon.com: Haunted : A Novel of Stories: Books: Chuck Palahniuk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The novel intersperses the writers' poems and short stories with tales of the indignities they heap upon themselves after deciding to turn their lives into a "true-life horror story with a happy ending." They lock themselves in the theater, reasoning that once they're found, they'll all become rich and famous.
Palahniuk tells his story with such blithe disregard for these characters that it's hard not to wish he had dispensed with the novel altogether and published, instead, the 23 short stories that pop up throughout the book.
The characters who attend this retreat write some stories and it is these short stories that are the shining light of this book and the reason that I rated it a 4 instead of a 3.

The Modern Word - "Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick" Review
In story after story, bland protagonists are surrounded by hackneyed science fiction props – sinister aliens, evil robots, and claustrophobic rocketships – that give the book the feel of an airless 50s movie theater.
The short story has the clever, policeman-chasing-himself framework that Dick would revert to repeatedly (and most effectively in his paranoid classic, A Scanner Darkly), but it lacks the narrative punch and witty panache of Spielberg’s film.
Douglas Quail, the hero of the story, opts for a “memory” implant in which he “becomes” an interplanetary secret agent who’s been to colonial Mars – the twist being that the implant process reveals to Quail that he really is a secret agent.

Amazon.com: Adrift on The Haunted Seas: The Best Short Stories of William Hope Hodgson: Books: William Hope ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Hodgson's sea stories have unusual authenticity owing to his having spent a lot of time on merchant's ships-he left his family in 1890 at the age of thirteen to spend eight years at sea, where the experience of mistreatment, poor pay, and worse food was contrasted by Hodgson's immeasurable fascination with the sea.
These stories are filled with strange sea creatures, such as deadly molds and fungi, gigantic crabs, sea serpents, octopi (the dreaded "devil-fish"), and sea caterpillars, and haunted direlects.
The first few tales of this anthology are astonishing in their portrayal of the sea as a monstrous force and an alien world to which human beings are drawn for reasons we do not understand.

 Scary True Stories DVD Review
Scary True Stories is a collection of 10 short tales that aired on Japanese television in the early 1990s.
The first story, "The Lonely Girl," centers around a young girl on the swim team who finds the locker room is the last place she wants to be.
But while Scary True Stories may not be that scary for adults, or even true for that matter, it is an important anthology in the horror genre, not only because it is the directorial debut of Norio Tsuruta (Ring 0: Birthday), but it is also a pre-cursor to the J-Horror boom.

 Haunted | The A.V. Club
At times, Haunted reads like a redux of the Marquis de Sade's repetitive grotesque-fest The 120 Days Of Sodom, with the one caveat that Palahniuk's characters are more inventive about their tortures, and more inclined to turn them on themselves than on others.
But in practice, none of them contain any stories but their own ugly histories—bizarre Grand Guignol adventures that give them hidden reasons to hide from the world, or more often, from pursuit and prosecution.
Many of the stories themselves are similarly cleverly constructed, giving the book a fractal-like quality that lets it operate on many levels.
