	German Army rank insignia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Enlisted personnel is largely made up of conscripts serving their nine months of mandatory service.
		A nine-month-soldier usually leaves the Army as Obergefreiter, but he may be promoted Hauptgefreiter der Reserve (private 1st class in reserve) effective the day of his discharge.
		Higher enlisted ranks are usually held by soldiers who either voluntarily serve several additional months and those who signed long-term contracts for pursuing officer or NCO careers but failed their training requirements.

	Gefreiter - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
		In the 20th century Gefreiter has expanded into several ranks, those being Obergefreiter, Hauptgefreiter, Stabsgefreiter and Oberstabsgefreiter.
		Following the NATO-RANK-CODE, Gefreiter ranks as Private (OR-2), Obergefreiter as PFC (OR-3 lower half), Hauptgefreiter as Lance-Corporal (OR-3 upper half), Stabsgefreiter and Oberstabsgefreiter as Corporal (OR-4) (no NCOs!).
		One of the best known holders of the rank of Gefreiter was Adolf Hitler, who held the rank in the Bavarian Infantry during World War I.

		Intersetingly,the comparison chart also shows a US corporal is equal to a hauptgefreiter.
		A Hauptgefreiter was not just a corporal,it was a senior full corporal with over 6 years service.This chart shows it equal to a normal US corporal.Again showing the US rank, though a lower grading,has it equal to higher graded German rank.

		Gefreiter is the German word for Corporal and has existed as a military rank since at least the 18th century.
		Through its development, Gefreiter has expanded into several ranks, those being Obergefreiter, Stabsgefreiter, and Hauptgefreiter.
		The German Navy has also periodically maintained a rank known as Matrosengefreiter, translated as "Seaman Corporal", and equivalent to a Leading Seaman.
