Currently, the few shops open in trading areas in Haut Mbomou do not sell bed nets, while the insecticides on sale are too expensive for the mainly impoverished population.

To help address this problem, in August 2004, MSF and the ministry of health signed an agreement to treat all malaria patients in the eastern prefecture of Haut Mbomou with highly effective artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT).
The teams, working in Haut Mbomou in the eastern region of Mboki, also offer primary health care services.
In addition to offering testing and medical treatment, MSF staff are also training national health staff working in 20 of the area's health structures and rehabilitating hospital wards, sanitation facilities, the laboratory and the waste-disposal center.

Dr Eugene Kpizingui, an epidemiologist and UNICEF health and nutrition project officer, said that the eastern provinces of Mbomou, Haut Mbomou, Haute Kotto and Vakaga were endemic zones, mostly because local populations did not have access to clean drinking water.
He said the region was close to neighbouring Sudan, a highly endemic zone.
