Have Space Suit—Will Travel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Have Space Suit—Will Travel is a juvenile science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, originally serialised in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (August, September, October 1958) and published by Scribner's in hardcover in 1958 as the last of the Heinlein juveniles.
Like his other juveniles, it is a well-constructed adventure story, but compared to many of them, it takes a more philosophical approach, examining what is noble and ignoble about the human race through a varied cast of characters that includes humans, aliens, and even a cave-man.
Once Kip is well, he, Peewee, and the Mother Thing travel to a planet in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud, to face an intergalactic tribunal which judges whether races pose a danger to their member species.

Spacesuit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A spacesuit is a complex system of garments, equipment, and environmental systems designed to keep a person alive and comfortable in the harsh environment of outer space.
Related preceding technologies include the gas mask used in WWII, the oxygen mask used by pilots of high flying bombers in WWII, the high altitude or vacuum suit required by pilots of the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird, the diving suit, rebreather, scuba diving gear and many others.
It is a very complicated task to provide an Earthlike comfortable environment to people traveling and working in harsh alien environments such as orbit or the lunar surface.

Have Gun, Will Travel transplanted the chivalric myth to television's post-Civil War west.
The hit CBS series aired from 1957 to 1963 and was centered on Paladin, an educated knight-errant gunslinger who, upon payment of $1,000, would leave his well-appointed suite in San Francisco's Hotel Carlton to pursue whatever mission of mercy or justice a well-heeled client commissioned.

SPACE.com -- High-Tech Spacesuits Eyed for 'Extreme Exploration'
The study is multi-pronged and is intended to better calibrate astronaut performance, explore improvements to current spacesuit designs and generate novel ideas for a new generation of space exploration suits.
Hodgson said an evolutionary approach will permit changes in response to altering mission needs, and also to infuse new technology as it develops with a minimum of system level redesign and recertification.
The ultimate goal of this concept is a symbiotic interaction of astronaut and spacesuit like that between humans and terrestrial plants in which the astronaut’s waste carbon dioxide and water vapor are converted back into respirable oxygen in the suit walls using environmental energy sources.

But imprisonment at the hands, or whatever, of the Wormfaces is a small threat indeed, compared to the even greater challenge that lies ahead for Kip: testifying at a tribunal held by the sentient species of three galaxies, which has gathered to judge whether humanity should be permitted another chance--or summarily destroyed.
Instead, Kip works hard to win the contest, and harder to render the spacesuit functional; Heinlein refuses to skimp on addressing just what this young man is willing to do to pursue a dream.
Although Have Space Suit--Will Travel is a lesser work by any standard, it still speaks well of his juveniles in general that they read now like an organic part of his lifetime output, and not like poor relations to the better-known behemoths that cemented his crossover reputation.

In the original version of the story, the first humans to travel to the stars discover the existence of radically superior aliens, the Gods of the Jockaira, and are awed by the gap between us and them.
Much of his reputation as "the youthful dean of science fiction" -- as it used to say on the back of his Signet paperbacks -- was based on his place as the premier master of imagined space flight.
Heinlein might still include space travel in some of his stories, but after this it would no longer enjoy the same central place it had held before.

Heinlein in Dimension, Chapter 3, Part 5
It is about a fat, fatuous, fair-loving retired salesman who spends his time in traveling, attending his beloved fairs.
The novel starts gently enough for anyone unfamiliar with science fiction: there is an eighteen-year-old boy who wants to go to the Moon, and who aims to get there by entering a soap slogan contest with a trip to the Moon as first prize.
The traveling simply demonstrates that the world is bigger than it once seemed to be.

Have Space Suit Will Travel was originally published in 1958, and it reads as fresh today as I'm sure it did then.
At times Heinlein's handling of the dialog is not as skilled as it will be in later works, and, as often is in Heinlein's work a little more editing would not be misplaced.

HearingBooks » Audio Book Review: Have Spacesuit Will Travel by Robert Heinlein
It’s the story of a youth (Kip Russel) who wins a spacesuit in a lottery, repairs it over the summer, is abducted to the moon by aliens, meets a 10-year old girl genius named Peewee, and (presumably) the two of them save the Earth from said aliens.
I do however commend the producers of the audio book for making the most of this medium: different actors perform the parts of Kip, Peewee, and some of the minor characters; and a few sound effects are thrown in for good measure.

Kip spends the summer following his high school graduation working hard on overhauling, refurbishing, and generally sprucing up his spacesuit so that it will be in full working order, absolutely airtight (some of the rubber gaskets and such were showing their age) and ready for action at a moment's notice.
