Havelock Vetinari - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lord Havelock Vetinari is the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, the head of the fictional city state of Ankh-Morpork in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
In his late teens, Vetinari was involved in the Glorious 25th of May (Night Watch), to which his most notable contribution was the non-assassination of the then-Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, Homicidal Lord Winder at a crowded party.
Vetinari was able to drop his weapon beside Winder's corpse without using it, and leave - all seemingly unobserved by anyone in the room bar Winder (suggested as the result of his use of camouflage rather than the Assassin's highly traditional and ineffective fl clothing).

Lord Vetinari appeared to be like the man in the middle of the arena who had managed somehow to chain all the wild horses to one another and is groaning theatrically while watching them drag one another to their knees.
Technically, Vetinari seems to have given in to every demand of every Guild for years, so the Guilds are driving themselves mad wondering why he is therefore still in charge.
Lord Vetinari lives in what was once the royal family's Winter Palace in Morpork (the summer palace is a long way from the city, and the reason will easily be appreciated by anyone who has spent a summer near the river).

Though Leonard doesn't look set to inherit all of the roles and duties of Rafiki, he is perfectly suited in the role as far as some of the mannerisms go, and, of course, Rafiki is the only character who is something of an artist, which would be perfect for Leonard.
Whilst Havelock is led to believe his daughter dead, Wonse seizes the moment to get rid of the Patrician, proclaiming to the citizens, with that typical traitor's gusto, that Havelock has proved himself to be little better than a murderer, a lion who let his own cub perish.
With Havelock still being alive, it is partially his job to topple Wonse and restore some form of democracy to the lands.

Vetinari nodded, not taking his eyes of the nervous wizard, who was feeling something stirring inside him that he was quite sure wasn’t supposed to be stirring.
Vetinari engulfed the wizard’s cock with his mouth, sucking mercilessly until Rincewind came with a prolonged scream of ecstasy.
Vetinari grabbed his discarded under-shirt and wiped up the milky liquid which coated the insides of Rincewind’s legs and his own face and chest.

The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, Vetinari is responsible for ensuring the continued smooth running of the city, and keeping the various guilds in line.
Observers have speculated on the reasons for his long term in office, but the overwhelming consensus seems to be that an Ankh-Morpork with Vetinari in it is slightly preferrable to one without Vetinari in it, from the point of view of each of the major guilds.
A happy and widely welcomed side effect of Vetinari's period in charge has been the immediate incarceration in a scorpion pit of all Ankh-Morpork's street mime artists.

Charming, funny, and a wonderful read, Going Postal follows the adventures of Moist von Lipwig a con artist who is faced with a dobson's choice between a painful death by hanging or working in the post office!
Lipwig, chooses the slightly less hideous of the two choices and accepts an appointment from Lord Havelock Vetinari as head of the Ankh-Morpork postal service - charged with the task of setting right all that is wrong with the aggrieved service.
To complicate matters, Lipwig must not only deal with daily nuisances such as seeing that the mail gets delivered even in the worst of weather, but he also must deal with the Post Office Worker's Friendly and Benevolent Society, the odd murder, and a ghost with a chip on his shoulder.
