The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is made up of 50 public libraries and is the only statewide system in the nation.
The Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped serves as the regional library and machine lending agency for the blind and physically disabled throughout the state and the outlying Pacific Islands in cooperation with the Library of Congress and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
Customers may request books and other material from a non-Hawaii State Public Library System library at a cost of $10.00 per item plus related costs such as postage, fines, copyright charges, the external library's fees, etc. A library card is required since the charges will be added to the card's financial account.

 Hawaii Library System Cancels Dynix Contract - September 28, 1998 - Library Journal
Trying to resolve another lingering controversy, new State Librarian Virginia Lowell announced September 14 that the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) had terminated the 5 1/2-year automation contract awarded in 1996 to Ameritech Library Services for its Dynix system.
The contract, part of the controversial reengineering and outsourcing project of former State Librarian Bart Kane, was protested by CARL Corp.; last year the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that Kane acted in bad faith in awarding the contract, worth about $600,000 a year.
The state and CARL remain in litigation over attorneys' fees, but the library system is not involved, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
