Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are found in a belt around the equator and in the humid subtropics, and are characterized by warm, humid climates with high year-round rainfall.
Tropical and subtropical regions with lower rainfall or distinct wet and dry seasons are home to Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests and Tropical and subtropical coniferous forests.
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are common in several terrestrial ecozones, including parts of the Afrotropic (equatorial Africa), Indomalaya (parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), the Neotropic (northern South America and Central America), Australasia (eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Australia), and Oceania (the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean).

Wetter parts of the islands are covered by Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, while the drier parts of the islands, including the leeward sides of the islands and many of the low coral islands, are covered by Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests and Tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands.
Oceania has a number of endemic species; Hawaii in particular is considered a global 'center of endemism', with its forest ecoregions having one of the highest percentages of endemic plants in the world.

Hort 403 - Reading - The Tropical Rain Forest Setting
Reestablishment of the forest during this period improves the structure and fertility of the soil and diminishes the weed and insect populations.
After the fallow period the forest may again be cleared and burned and the land farmed for a year or two in a diverse mixture of tropical root, grain, and fruit crops.
The intense tropical sun and soil compaction, like nutrient depletion, also impede the establishment of young seedlings because their roots are not able to penetrate deeply enough to reach a reliable water supply during the dry season.

Tropical Forests and the Global Carbon Cycle
Although the destruction of temperate forests may have released significant amounts of CO2 in the 19th century (17), it now appears that the net release from all non tropical regions was at most about 0.1 GT in 1980, with a greater likelihood that it was near zero (18).
This recovery of forest vegetation sequesters some proportion of the carbon released as a result of clearing, thus, it is important to distinguish between temporary and permanent clearing in the tropics because the net release of CO2 from the former is significantly less than that from the latter (25).
Thus the average biomass of forests subjected to disturbance may be different from the average for all tropical forests and the higher estimates of carbon storage may be a better representation.

The Luquillo Experimental Forest is presented as a possible model to exemplify forestry practices and research that could manage and ultimately protect the tropical forests throughout the world.
Mangrove forests grow in the swampy, intertidal margin between sea and shore and are often considered part of the rain forest complex.
Forest nurseries must be established, and planting techniques and cultural practices (spacing and thinning, pruning, fertilization, insect and disease control, and genetic improvement) must be developed.

While we often associate Hawaii with beautiful rain forests, which occur on the mountaintops of the smaller islands and on the windward sides of the larger islands, the islands' moist forest regions are also home to wet shrublands and bogs in swampy areas.
Hawaii has already lost two-thirds of its original forests to agriculture, clearing, and fire, and half its native birds through habitat loss and introduced disease.

Cyclones occasionally devastate large areas of forest and are especially damaging to smaller, remnant forest patches.
Currently one of the greatest threats to the forests of the Society Islands is an introduced tree (Miconia calvescens) that now covers 65 percent of Tahiti and much of two other islands.
Forest clearing, poaching for food and feathers, and introduced species that compete with or prey upon native fauna all threaten the islands' wildlife.

In Hawai`i I am beginning projects to examine 1) productivity, nutrient use, and growth of the entire plant community in nitrogen versus phosphorus limited systems; and 2) traits and resource use of highly successful invasive species in forest understories, and 3) forest structure and function in remnant lowland wet forest patches.

Regulation of water flux through tropical forest canopy trees: Do universal rules apply?
Tropical moist forests are notable for their richness in tree species.
We measured sapwood area or sap flow, or both, in 27 co-occurring canopy species in a Panamanian forest to determine the extent to which relationships between tree size, sapwood area and sap flow were species-specific, or whether they were constrained by universal functional relationships between tree size, conducting xylem area, and water use.
For the 24 species in which active xylem area was estimated over a range of size classes, diameter at breast height (DBH) accounted for 98% of the variation in sapwood area and 67% of the variation in sapwood depth when data for all species were combined.
