  9638—Hawaiian Independence; Eritrea Rising—9/17/96
The Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council was created and members appointed by the Governor to organize and send mail-in ballots to approximately 85,000 Kanaka Maoli living in Hawaii and the continental United States.
The importance behind this is to understand that the Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council was appointed by the Governor of the State of Hawaii and the people that have consented to be on the Hawaiian Sovereignty Elections Council were never elected by the Kanaka Maoli people.
Instead what we want is the native Hawaiian people themselves to develop a process to make their own determination as to who is and what is a forum to represent the native Hawaiian people.

The Hawaiian spiritual belief in the fundamental inequality of people in the eyes of god(s), based on ancestry, is the basis for demanding first-class citizenship for ethnic Hawaiians; while the other 80 percent of Hawaii's people would be second-class citizens with limited voting rights and limited property rights.
The Hawaiian religious belief in a family relationship among the gods, these islands, and the ethnic Hawaiians is used as a spiritual basis for asserting a political claim to racial supremacy.

Hawaiians are also offered the sovereign models of a Nation within a Nation and State within a State governments.
Hawaiians are clearly a nation, however for a nation to be sovereign and independent they must have a form of government.
An independent nation is sovereign when they control their internal affairs, and have formed a government and mechanism to "make and amend their laws, provide for its citizens and administer to its domain." (Native Hawaiian Rights Handbook, p.

Hawaiian Kingdom - United Nations Complaint Press Release - July 6, 2001
The Hawaiian Kingdom has requested the Security Council, in accordance with Article 36(1) of the United Nations Charter, to investigate the Hawaiian Kingdom question, in particular, the merits of the complaint, and to recommend appropriate procedures or methods of adjustment.
The Hawaiian Kingdom acquired the recognition of its independence on December 19, 1842, by the United States of America; April 1, 1843, by the United Kingdom; and by joint proclamation between the United Kingdom and France on November 28, 1843.
The underlying problem here was that the Hawaiian Kingdom had already achieved independence for the Hawaiian Islands since 1842, and the United States and other members of the Community of States also recognized this independence.

Further, Hawaiian subjects, who were indoctrinated in the belief that they were American nationals, served in many American conflicts throughout the world to date, and many of whom ultimately gave their lives for a country not of their own.
This action taken by the Respondent Hawaiian Kingdom Government, with the consent of the Claimant, was a deliberate attempt to have the United States of America put forward its arguments before an International Tribunal as it relates to Hawaiian statehood and the violation of the Claimant's rights.
The Claimant is but one of many Hawaiian subjects, who are beginning to understand and ultimately exercise their civil and political rights they constitutionally possess, as well as foreign nationals, to include American citizens, who also understand their rights secured by the divers treaties and conventions between the Hawaiian Kingdom and their nations.

She said citizens of the independent Hawaiian archipelago should have "a concerted effort to malama 'aina (to live in harmony with the land) as a basic tenet of a new constitution," along with swearing allegiance to the nation.

I agree 100% that Hawaii was illegally annexed, improperly administered as a territory and nefariously tricked into statehood.
The argument for outright independence is a viable argument with the exception of the fact that a de facto Hawaiian government does exist as a state and that state is part of the union.
Hawaiians seeking independence are then left with two choices, 1) revolt and over throw the de facto state government or 2) utilize the philosophy of secession to take the de facto government out of the Union and then reestablish a legitimate government.

Hawaiians who insisted on keeping their Hawaiian citizenship were not allowed to vote.
Some argue that as citizens of the Hawaiian nation in 1893 were of a multitude of races who remained loyal to the Queen and supported Hawaiian independence, the right of self-determination should be based on allegiance and loyalty to Hawai'i.
While the vast majority of Hawaiian citizens were Native Hawaiians, citizenship was based on allegiance and loyalty to the place one considered his or her "homeland." Consequently, he suggests that in asserting self-determination, the "self"--or collective group--should not be solely the indigenous people of Hawai'i, but must include those who consider Hawai'i their homeland.

One thing I thought was interesting was that, after Franken played Rush Limbaugh’s bogus claims that the U.S. was ’strictly neutral’; in the overthrow, he asked her if at the time of the ‘overthrow’ the kingdom was only Native Hawaiian.
Danner stated, that there were “certain people that we allowed citizenship to serve in our government,” and that “the vast majority of citizens in our nation were Native Hawaiians.” While her statements in that regard were technically true, she was intentionally downplaying the extent to which the Hawaiian kingdom was multi-racial.
But in order to squeeze Hawaiians into the domestic dependent nation status, Danner wants to sweep this under the rug, and intentionally downplay, ignore or deny the reality of history.
