In early 1827, a couple years before Hawesville was founded, two salesmen rushed down to the Ohio River bank near the mouth of Anderson's Creek, requesting a ride to a steamboat awaiting in midstream.

Hawesville Mayor Charles King was arrested Tuesday night in Tell City, Ind., and was held overnight on a preliminary charge of driving under the influence.
Perry County prosecutor Robert Collins said King, who was elected Hawesville's mayor in 1998 and re-elected in 2002, was arrested about 9:30 p.m.
In August, 2002, King and a Hawesville businessman were arrested by Hancock County sheriff's deputies, after engaging in a round of unauthorized fisticuffs on Main Cross Street.

NEW YORK -- Century Aluminum Co., which exited the aluminum sheet and plate business last September with the sale of rolling operations to Pechiney Aluminium of Paris, is ready to up its stake in the primary aluminum smelting side of the aluminum business in the United States.
Century Aluminum, the most vigorous tire-kicker at the Hawesville smelter in the latter days of 1999 (AMM, Dec. 31, 1999), emphasized late Tuesday that it has a nonbinding agreement with Carrollton, Ga.,-based Southwire and that it plans to open negotiations with the USW before the week is up.
The Hawesville smelter is rated at 237,000 tonnes a year by dint of a 50,000-tonne addition that was brought on-stream in 1999.
