Hawiye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hawiye (or Hawiya) is a Somali clan, comprising about 25% of the Somali population.
The Hawiye live in central and southern Somalia, but also in larger numbers in Kenya and Ethiopia.
Subclans of the Abgal are Wabudhan (Daoud, Rer Mattan, Mohamed Muse), Harti (Agonyar, Warsangeli and Abokor) and Waesli.

The Hawiye occupy the south central portions of Somalia.
In numbers the Hawiye in Somalia are roughly comparable to the Isaaq, occupying a distant second place to the Daarood clans.
Although the Hawiye had not held any major office since independence, they had occupied important administrative positions in the bureaucracy and in the top army command.

Arta (IRIN, 2 Aug 2000) -The Hawiye, allocated 44 seats as one of the four main groups, have "90 percent agreement" but have been unable to satisfy some of the smallest sub-clans, one delegate told IRIN.
According to the delegate, the Hawiye "have developed a culture of dividing up over the last 10 years, since the establishment of the United Somali Congress (USC)".
The USC was an Hawiye opposition movement which established a congress in 1989, and divided up the central committee among the sub-clans.

After more than three months of peace talks at a plush villa in Arta, some 30 km southwest of Djibouti city, one of the main clans, the Hawiye, is expected to be given the task of heading the new transitional authority in the shattered nation.
Mogadishu is traditionally Hawiye territory, which gives the recent creators of mayhem a critical, if ironic, role in re-establishing national peace, according to analysts.
Hawiye faction leaders were initially anointed by the clan elders in the early 1990’s, but then used "warlordism" to undercut traditional power.

He fears that the Hawiye clan will be controlling the airport on his arrival in Mogadishu and that they will immediately ascertain his clan membership and the fact that he is the son of a former Shikal elder.
The family was told by the Hawiye that they would suffer the consequences of their refusal to provide support to the clan, once the Hawiye came into power in Mogadishu.
The State party's indication of the existence of an agreement between the Shikal and Hawiye clans affording some sort of protection to the Shikal is categorically refuted by counsel on the basis of information provided by reliable sources, and is considered as unreliable and impossible to corroborate.

In less than twenty six days the masses of Hawiye both ended a thirty year old domination and dealt death blow to the oppressive state institutions that served this domination.
Namely, if Hawiye people destroyed state institutions in order to deprive the overthrown enemy any tools to reconstitute themselves then it is time for Hawiye people to create unqiue Hawiye institutions that would protect Hawiye freedom and economy.

The clan-based Sharia courts -- almost all of which are affiliated with Hawiye lineages -- are valued by local populations and business interests, and constitute one of the few sources of local governance in southern Somalia.

These actions were waged first against the Majeerteen clan (of the Daarood clan-family), then against the Isaaq clans of the north, and finally against the Hawiye, who occupied the strategic central area of the country, which included the capital.
The disaffection of the Hawiye and their subsequent organized armed resistance eventually caused the regime's downfall.
