Hawker Siddeley was a group of UK aircraft manufacturing companies formed as a result of the merger of Hawker Aircraft with Armstrong Siddeley.
During the Second World War, the Hawker Siddeley company was one of the United Kingdom's most important aviation concerns, producing numerous designs including the famous Hawker Hurricane fighter plane that, along with the Supermarine Spitfire, was instrumental in winning the Battle of Britain.

 THE SPECIAL OSPREY:
The disadvantage of the Osprey is the relatively small payload, however with 100 percent of materials going to the target, the overall requirement is less.
The ability of the Osprey to use strategic refueling prior to entering denied territory, then use SOF MC-130 Combat Talons for refueling inside, means that the Osprey can reach almost any region in the world from home base in less than one day.
For example, if the operation is planned jointly to use Ospreys along with Army SOF helicopters, either as gunship escort, or additional lift assets, then the mission becomes limited by the range and speed of the helicopters.

Unreal Aircraft - Beating Gravity - Hawker Siddeley P.1127
By the 1960s VTOL research in the USA had come almost to a standstill; but at that time the UK was progressing with development of the Pegasus vectored-thrust engine.
Some support came from the USAF and NASA; though the engine would be inadequate for their own projections for a heavy strike fighter, they foresaw the potential benefits which might accrue to the US if the promising design succeeded.
The Hawker Siddeley P.1127 research type developed directly into the world's first operational VTOL jet fighter.

In July 1942 the Ospreys were superceded by float equiped Saab S 17BS and in 1943 they were taken out of operational service, the last was retired in 1945.
Due to the submarine hazard the Ospreys were not intended to be recovered aboard the ship during combat, but instead fly to some coastal seaplane base and land.

 VTOL Summary
A different type of V/STOL aircraft is the helicopter-like V-22 Osprey, which employs two swiveling tilt-rotors that allow it to take off and land very much like a helicopter, while flying with performance comparable to a turboprop airplane.
Although the Osprey is considerably slower than the Harrier, mangaing only 300 knots in cruise mode, it can carry a much larger payload and answer some of the objections about the Harrier's limited transport ability.
This was developed side by side with an airframe, the Hawker P.1127, which became subsequently the Kestrel and then the Harrier.

The Hawker Tempest was just about the fastest piston-engined fighter aircraft to grace the skies at the end of World War 2 and beyond.
He was sent to Florida for aircrew training and, on his return to England, he joined 3 Squadron who had converted to Hawker Typhoons.
The former was a technical nightmare redeemed as a ground attack machine, whilst the latter proved to be the most superlative low and medium level fighter to see service with the RAF, and arguably any air force, during the latter stages of World War 2.

Given the limited space on board a carrier, it was also desirable for the fleet defense fighter to be capable of performing other missions, such as dive-bombing and general reconnaissance.
The first fleet defense fighter was the Hawker Osprey, a development of the Hawker Hart, which had been a two-seat light day bomber with performance superior to RAF fighters at the time of its first appearance in 1929.
By the mid-1930s, however, the Osprey was long in the tooth and bomber development in potential enemy nations clearly demonstrated a need for an airplane with increased performance.

It moved to Yeovilton, Somerset, in May 1940 and later that year to Trinidad in the West Indies where it served until disbanded in October 1945 after the war ended.
