The Andover was developed from the Avro 748 airliner to meet the requirement for Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) transport aircraft to operate in the trooping, paratrooping, airdropping, freighting and casevac roles.
The modified aircraft incorporates a hydraulic kneeling arrangement in the nose undercarriage to allow the rear loading door to adjust to any truckbed height.
The first Andover flew in July 1965 and a total of 31 were built.

Hawker Siddeley (Avro) HS.748 Andover - transport, passenger
Starting life as an A. Roe project in 1958, the original Type 748 was planned as a 20-seat short/medium-range feeder airliner.
When no interest was shown in the design, it was scaled up in size and the Hawker Siddeley Group, of which Avro was a component company, decided to put the aircraft into production.
Redesignated HS.748 in 1963, later versions included the Series 2 and Series 2A (1967) civil transports; Andover CC.Mk 1 and CC.Mk 2 for the RAF, the former being two specially equipped examples for The Queen's Flight; the Coastguarder variant was also developed, optimised for maritime patrol, flying in 1977.

 Avro Information
The Royal Flight of the United Kingdom bought a few and a variant with a rear-loading ramp and a "kneeling" main undercarriage was sold to the RAF and several members of the Commonwealth as the Andover, named after a town in Hampshire.
When the company was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation in July 1963 the Avro name seemed to have disappeared forever but the brand had such a strong heritage appeal that the marketing name "Avro RJ" (regional jet) was applied to the British Aerospace 146 from 1994 to 2001.

Originally designed in the 1950s as one of the contenders for the title of DC-3 replacement, the Avro (later Hawker Siddeley then British Aerospace) 748 was powered, like the Fokker F-27, by the versatile Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop and started life as a short haul commuter passenger transport.
The 748 is still widely deployed in passenger service worldwide, although increasing numbers have become freighters with niche operators, supporting both postal and integrator services in Europe, and freight duties in exotic regions including the Canadian Arctic.
A military version of the 748, the Andover, was also produced, incorporating a rear loading ramp and a kneeling undercarriage.
