Hawker Typhoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The basic design of both continued the Hawker tradition of using 'older' construction techniques; the front fuselage was welded steel just like the Hurricane, and the design used a massive 40 foot (12 m) wing that was much thicker than those on designs like the Spitfire.
For use in the tactical reconnaissance role, the Typhoon FR.IB was developed early in 1945.
Hawker developed an improved version of the Typhoon, the Typhoon II but the differences between it and the Mark I were so great that it was effectively a different plane, the Hawker Tempest.

The Typhoon was designed by the Hawker team under Sydney Camm, Chief Designer of Hawker Aircraft Ltd., as a direct and logical development of the Hawker Hurricane.
In the head-on view of the Typhoon there is a noticeable "crank" in the wings caused by slight anhedral on the centre section followed by dihedral on the outer wing sections.
In the Hawker Typhoon, Fighter Command has yet another aeroplane which is far ahead in technical development of all aeroplanes in the Luftwaffe.

 TYPHOON
Hawker got an order for 1000 planes, 500 Tornado’s and 250 Typhoons, the other 250 were to be built with the engine that was test as the best.
Because Hawker was producing the Hurricane, the Tornado was to be built by AVRO and the Typhoon by Gloster, associated company’s of the Hawker Siddley Group.
The Typhoons had the shape similar to the FW 190, and to anticipate any confusion the Typhoons were in 1943 fitted out with broad fl and white stripes.

The first outwardly visible change to the Typhoon occurred when the canopy was changed to a clear view rear section instead of the solid fairing - although entry was still through a car-style door.
Hawker decided that 12 × 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) guns would also increase the firepower by 50%, so they included that option as well. Two airframe variants were developed, the R-type (for the Rolls Royce Vulture engine), and the N-type (for the Napeir Sabre engine).
These were to be named the 'Tornado' and Typhoon' respectively. The design emphasized on strength and maintainability, instead of elegance, and was also one of the first design to have a 'bubble'-like cockpit like also seen on the North American P-51D or the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

 Hawker
Hawker had long since established itself as a maker of very good fighter aircraft, dating back to World War I. In 1933, the chief designer of Hawker, Sydney Camm, proposed a design of a new monoplane largely based upon the Hawker Fury biplane, to be powered by the Rolls Royce Goshawk engine.
Hawker’s Sydney Camm set to work and he and his team designed a fighter that would be tested with each engine.
The Typhoon II would have a thinner wing, not unlike that already used by the Spitfire and America’s P-47 Thunderbolt (Seversky, later to become Republic, had used the elliptical wing planform long before Mitchell adapted it to the Spitfire).

Typhoon Mk IB The first production aircraft were supplied to the RAF in September 1941, initially to No. 56 (F) Squadron, and service use demonstrated only too quickly that the airframe problems had not been eradicated.
Fortunately, Hawker was able to discover the reason for an alarming number of aircraft losing the complete tail unit, but it was almost the end of 1942 before all engine and airframe bugs had been resolved.
Thereafter Typhoon squadrons ranged over France and the Low Countries, playing havoc with German communications, but their full potential was realised in late 1943 when the type was equipped to carry rocket projectiles.

The Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter aircraft, produced by Hawker Aircraft[?].
The work proved useful when Hawker received specification F.18/37 in January 1938 from the Air Ministry, which asked for a fighter based around either the Napier Saber[?] or the Rolls-Royce Vulture[?] engine.

The Hawker Typhoon, Tempest, & Sea Fury
The Typhoon's thick, rugged wing was partly to blame for some of the aircraft's performance problems, and as far back as March 1940 a few engineers had been set aside to investigate the new "laminar flow" wing, which the Americans had implemented in the P-51 Mustang.
The new wing was originally longer than that of the Typhoon, at 13.1 meters (43 feet), but then the wingtips were clipped off and the wing became shorter than that of the Typhoon, at 12.5 meters (41 feet).
Hawker concentrated on the Sea Fury for the Royal Navy, since the admirals felt they needed to stay with piston fighters for a few years until the complications of operating jet aircraft from carriers were worked out.

The 820-mile range of the Tempest V in clean condition was an appreciable improvement over that of the Typhoon, and was due not only to the small additional quantity of fuel carried but to the aerodynamic refinement of the later machine which permitted a higher cruising speed for the same power.
The Typhoon was designed in a naval fighter variant to meet the requirements of specification N.11/40, and one prototype was converted to this standard under the Hawker project designation P.1009.
Another Typhoon modification, the P.1010, was to have had leading-edge radiators and a turbo blower, but work on this was not proceeded with.

Although the decision to use the Typhoon before it was ready was ultimately justified by the results, it meant in the beginning that the first Typhoon squadrons were virtually continuing the flight test development of the aircraft with one of the facilities for the job but every disadvantage.
Without the tremendous pressure resulting from these accidents, however, it is unlikely that the Typhoon would have developed and been available in adequate numbers to provide one of the finest ground-support aircraft for the invasion of Europe some eighteen months later.
Emergency landings became an inevitable part of the routine of flying Typhoons; and the prospect particularly of engine trouble over the sea was not a happy one.
