The Family of Middlemore   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
On the grounds that Hawkesley Farm is of no historical interest whatever, the Corporation proposed demolishing it, and filling in the moat, leaving only a tracing of the watercourse as a sign that it once existed.
In the King's Norton Tithe Award the houses both at Longbridge and King's Norton are called "Hawkesley Farm and moat." Tredway Nash, in his "History of Worcestershire" had no doubt that the besieged house was half a mile from the turnpike road leading into Birmingham.
In 1552 John Middlemore sold land in Rednal Yield, Hawkesley farm was in Rednal Yield, whereas Hawkesley Hall was in Headly Yield.

The Family of Middlemore   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
HAWKESLEY, more anciently known as Hawkeslow, is an old moated residence in the parish of King's Norton which gave its name to the family of Hawkeslowe, whose heiress, Agnes Hawkeslowe, brought it in the early years of the fifteenth century to Nicholas Middlemore, a younger son of Thomas Middlemore and Isabel Edgbaston.
John Middlemore succeeded to the whole of Hawkesley in 1633-4, but his affairs seem to have become very much involved, and in 1637 he was imprisoned for debt in Worcester gaol where he remained until his death about sir, years later.
His house at Hawkesley was seized and garrisoned by the Parliamentary forces early in 1645.

Caldey Island - The Kynaston-Hawkesley Era
He was what some could call a father figure to the island people, caring deeply about the children of his employee’s, making sure they were educated and not allowing a pub to be erected on the island to give the children a safe and loving environment in which to prosper.
Upon Cabot’s death in 1866, the island was purchased by James Hawkesley, who carried forth with his predecessor’s good works and fair treatment of the workers, and this endeared him to the people, as did Cabot’s attitudes before him.
After Hawkesley died, the island was briefly owned by Thomas Cunningham, who did not seem to take an interest in the island, apart from the financial aspect.

Hawkesley House, still remarkable for a very fine moat and famous for the Parliamentarian siege in 1645, yet remains in the possession of the Middlemore family, being at the present time the property of Mr.
No small interest attaches to the place from the fact that it has now been in the possession of the Middlemores for some fifteen generations, and previously was owned by their ancestors the Hawkeslows, who were, as will be seen later, a family of some local importance.
The latter's second son, William Middlemore (55), of Hawkesley, married his maternal cousin german, Eleanor Middlemore, of Haselwell, and lastly, Mary Middlemore, daughter of Richard Middlemore (58), of Hawkesley, married her second cousin, John Middlemore (66), of Stratford-on-Avon.
