  Hawkman (1939) - Don Markstein's Toonopedia
Hawkman was Carter Hall, wealthy collector of ancient weapons, who learned in a vision that he was the reincarnation of the ancient Egyptian Prince Khufu, and therefore tied by bonds of eternal love to a woman named Shiera.
Hawkman was a charter member of The Justice Society of America, and the only one to participate in all of the JSA's 1940s adventures.
He also participated in the 1960s JSA revival, although by that time there was a new Hawkman flying around the DC Universe.

Hawkman was JSA chair in 1951 when the JSA was investigated by the "Joint Congressional Un-American Activities Committee" (based on the real-life House Un-American Activities Committee) for possible Communist sympathies and asked to reveal their identities.
Hawkman II joined the Justice League of America in the early 1960s, where he befriended The Atom and frequently sparred with Green Arrow with whose "question authority" outlook the lawman frequently disagreed.
Hawkman II left the JLA for a time when Thanagar was hit by the Equalizer Plague, which caused all Thanagarians to change so that their physical and mental talents, and even their heights, became the same.

Shortly thereafter, Hawkman answered a call from Superman that that resulted in his "drowning" in the river of Koehaha, Colorado's "Stream of Ruthlessness." Hawkman then went on a maddened rampage, seeking an ancient Egyptian secret of immortality, until the river's effect drove him to return and confront the Ultra-Humanite.
Hawkman was also skilled in the use of a variety of ancient weapons, which he preferred in combat.

Hawkman was now an avatar of the “hawk spirit” or some shit, and at some point Katar Hol and Carter Hall were mystically fused together to fight the evil Hawkgod.
Hawkman was stuck in another dimension for a while, until writers Geoff Johns and David Goyer resurrected him in Golden Age form and he joined the JSA.
That said, the new "origin" idea is not to have one: Hawkman is a continually reincarnated hero, as is Hawkgirl/woman, destined to both die at the hands ot the continually reincarnated villan.

Back in issue #34 of Hawkman, writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray got the ball rolling on what would be called, in today’s parlance, Hawkman’s very own “Hush.” Or, to the less hyperbole inclined, a bunch of Hawkman’s enemies decided to pile on and kick feathers.
As a result, not too many of the early Hawkman books I’ve read have ever struck a chord with me. However, with his return in the pages of JSA a few years ago, I was struck with the badass attitude Geoff Johns has imbued the character with.
Whereas I considered Hawkman to be somewhat laughable before, now I see him as one of the tougher heroes of the DCU.
