List of Melbourne railway stations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of the 200 currently operating suburban railway stations (216 including greater metropolitan stations) in Melbourne, Australia.
There are also a further 19 stations on 3 heritage, volunteer-operated, tourist railways.
Stations are broken up into 3 Metcard ticketing zones (some stations are in two zones, where tickets for either zone may be used), as well as the City Saver area, which is within Zone 1 and covers the central business district.

Agent FareEvader's Hecho En Mexico - Who reads this bit, anyway?
The station itself was victim to fire in the early nineties and was extensively rebuilt as a shopping mall.
I assume this to be in reference to an incident that occurred in mid 2003, where a 15-year old youth was questioned for a ticket, and opened the door while the train was in motion, leaping out as the train sped along at 80km/h.
These proved to be too heavily modified for the motors installed in them, and were restricted to the relatively level Williamstown, Sandringham, Port Melbourne and St Kilda lines for their short lives before they too were refurbished into the H sets for interurban use.

The station has three (A woman's shoe with a very high thick sole) platforms; platforms 1 (the southernmost) and 2 form an island platform, with platform 3 to the north.
Although the station is historic, it is not actually protected by any of the state's heritage listings for any architectural or cultural reasons, and failed to gain this protection after the community outrage at the development plans.

Agent FareEvader's Hecho En Mexico - Who reads this bit, anyway?
The Port Melbourne and St Kilda lines, due to their length, were not financially viable operations as heavy rail, and as a result in 1987 both these lines were converted to Light Rail and the Melbourne Tram gauge (Standard Gauge, 1435mm) from the Victorian Railways Broad Gauge (1600mm).
Overall, it was a day spent immersed in the history of the Victorian Railways, observing and admiring the system as it stands, albeit a modern, sleek and professional shadow of its former self.
On the St Kilda Line (Tram Route 96) the original Stations are still in place, many of them have been converted to housing or community centres.

Shop Fresh : Article 'Melbourne Central railway station'
Melbourne Central is not the city's central station, as the name suggests, (Flinders Street is the city's central suburban station), but is named after the shopping centre built above and around the station concourse.
Melbourne Central, like the other two underground City Loop stations (Parliament and Flagstaff) has four platforms over two levels, each serving a separate group of rail lines that leave the Loop and radiate out into the city's suburbs.
The station was originally named Museum, after the nearby Melbourne Museum in the State Library of Victoria complex on Swanston Street.

 Stonnington History News - #31
Its construction represents a deviation from the low-cost timber structure which was typical of the stations built by the early private companies and from the standard layouts associated with stations built by the Victorian Railways Department.
South Yarra Station is the odd one out in this discussion of the Gippsland line, as it was constructed in the early 1860s to serve the Princes Bridge to Windsor line.
All the stations were then left at the wrong level and/or in the wrong place, and the bold solution adopted around 1915 was to build new stations – the Edwardian structures that we see today.

 Hawksburn, Victoria
It was named after Hawksburn House (situated near where the railway station was later built), which was so named when its owner saw a hawk near a stream which he likened to a Scottish burn.
Unlike neighbouring Prahran, Hawksburn was not provided with rail transport until the Gippsland railway was connected between South Yarra and Caulfield in 1879.
Hawksburn's land is elevated above Prahran's and it attracted a number of large residences whose owners favoured such sites because of their superior drainage.
