Hawkworld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hawkworld was a comic book from DC Comics that explored the origins of Hawkman and Hawkwoman.
However, DC editors decided that Hawkworld was not just an origin story; rather, it was occurring in the present, concurrently with the rest of DC's output.
This meant that the Hawks' entire history from the Silver Age of Comic Books onwards had to be disregarded, including their memberships in the Justice League.

It was the Hawkworld one that finally really grabbed me. This, to me, is the only version of the character that was really fully fleshed out, personality-wise.
The others, we know what he does for a living, we know what his interests are, how he acts and reacts, but the Hawkworld Katar Hol is the only one where I felt we had a view into his actual thought processes and saw the character grow over time.
Hawkworld had good atmosphere in the inital issues but it should never have messed with the continuity like it did.

He can take a dog of a comic like Hawkworld and make it one of the most thought provoking and underappreciated books of the 90s.
Hawkworld got a lot of flak for being the biggest continuity hole in the post Crisis DCU, and because of that, I think many people unfairly dismissed the book out of hand.
I also have not read the Hawkworld mini-series so some of my complaints may have been answered there.

I’ve always thought that this series stood well on its own, and that it was almost unfortunate that they had to follow it up at all.
That said, this was a Hawkman that I would’ve liked to have continued reading about, but the Hawkworld ongoing never quite captured my imagination in the same way.
I recall that the Hawkworld mini-series wasn’t intended to be the lead-in to the ongoing series.

Dave's Long Box: Let's tawk about Hawkman
Then came 1989’s Hawkworld, by writer/artist Tim Truman, who reimagined utopian Thanagar as a planet of floating cities ruled by the fascist Wingmen police, where the rich elite live on the backs of the oppressed Downsiders.
This three-issue mini-series led into the Hawkworld ongoing series, which was an interesting political fable about a former fascist who comes around to the idea of sentient rights and is profoundly affected by the US Constitution.
Truman originally wrote Hawkworld imagining that this was the back story of Hawkman before he joined the Justice League, but editor Mike Carlin wanted to set the ongoing Hawkworld series in modern times.

As the revolution between the ruling class and the Downsiders escalates on Thanagar, Shayera is sent back to Earth with Fel Andar to retrieve the Attila unit, unaware that her partner has also been instructed by his uncle, Andar Pul, to kill her.

According to the original story of Katar Hol's origin, as related by Gardner Fox, Katar Hol was the son of Paran Katar, an ornithologist, and was the first "wingman" and a district commander of the Hawk Police of Thanagar when we first met him.

But if this is the same Shayera Thal shown in Hawkworld #1, it explains a lot....Andar Pul, feeling guilty about the rape/seduction, would have given her special treatment and preference over other recruits.

Seriously, it's not that hard to fit in BOTH his original JLA appearances and his Hawkworld career in continuity.
But since his post-Crisis version had a career as a ninja thief before he got the Shadow Field generator, perhaps Carter battled him in that form and he was thus still an Injustice Ganger.
