The final line survey went south of this point, however, and Hawley then became known as the first crossing of the Buffalo in correspondence, while Muskoda at the west end of Hawley Township was designated the second crossing of the Buffalo.
Hawley was subjected to a lot of name calling and changing during the first months of 1872.
Hawley received its correct name on or before April 3, 1872, and it was confirmed on that date by Canfield in New York in a letter to Hobart at Brainerd.

SAMUEL HAWLEY, a farmer of section 5, Berry township, Dane county, Wisconsin, was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, in 1830, a son of Samuel and Hannah (Cherry) Hawley.
The first winter the Hawley family lived on one of the Emigration and Society Farms, then rented a place near by, and in the spring of 1849 purchased 160 acres in this township, where the father died in January, 1860, aged about fifty-five years, and the mother in 1881, at the age of seventy-six years.
Hawley is a stanch Republican in his political views, and has served as Supervisor of the Side Board one term.

Melvin Torkelson is the son of Ole Torkelson whose parents Torkel and Sigri Anfinson came in 1879 to Hawley, Minnesota.
Ole filed a claim on land in what is now Smiley Township and since the timber in that area had been destroyed by fire, he thought he would build a sod shanty, such as he had seen on the prairies of North Dakota.
