The Hawks origins are in the inner Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn and Glenferrie Oval.
Hawthorn broke through to their first finals appearance in 1957, and in 1961 they went one better, winning their first premiership by defeating Footscray.
The Hawks enjoyed a sucessful year, their last for several to come, reaching the preliminary final where they lost to eventual runner-up Essendon after they defeated Port Adelaide in one of the games of the year in the dying minutes by a single kick.
