Shinkansen: The New Way To Ride That Wi-Fi Cloud The concept to offer Wi-Fi service to train commuters has recently been announced by the Central Japan Railway, or JR Tokai, the operators of the Shinkansen that connects the cities of Tokyo and Osaka.
The "Shinkansen" name was first formally used in 1940 for a proposed standard gauge passenger/freight line between Tokyo and Shimonoseki, using steam and electric locomotives with a top speed of 200 km/h (twice the speed of the fastest Japanese train at the time).

The southern half of the Kyushu Shinkansen, connecting Yatsushiro with Kagoshima, was inaugurated in March 2004.
Currently under construction are the further extension of the Tohoku Shinkansen to Aomori and the extension of the Nagano Shinkansen to Kanazawa.

The name Shinkansen literally means "New Trunk Line", and thus should technically refer to the lines and not the trains, which are officially referred to as "Super Expresses".
The prefix 'shin' means 'new' in Japanese and oftentimes when building the Shinkansen network, it was not feasible to build it to the already existing station, therefore a second station was built with the 'shin prefix'.
Shinkansen trains now run regularly at speeds of up to 300 km/h, putting them among the fastest trains running in the world, along with the French TGV and German ICE trains.

Shinkansen is famous for its high speed; actually it is not only fast, but very convenient and efficient.
Its scenery may be rather dull because everytime Shinkansen line comes to mountainous areas or even small hills, it goes straight into a long long tunnel to avoid curving, which is the obstacle to its high speed.
You may often have to change Shinkansen to a limited express at the junction if you extend your journey off the beaten track, although schedule is generally well organized and you have only to wait for several minutes at the connections.

Tōhoku Shinkansen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tōhoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線) is a high-speed rail line, connecting Tokyo with Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture for a total length of 593 km, Japan's longest Shinkansen line.
From Aomori, construction is underway to continue the line under the name Hokkaido Shinkansen, passing through the world's longest railway tunnel, the Seikan Tunnel to Shin-Hakodate on Hokkaido, and eventually all the way to Sapporo.
Through trains on the Akita Shinkansen and Yamagata Shinkansen lines also run on Tōhoku Shinkansen tracks from Morioka and Fukushima respectively.

The Shinkansen are bullet trains, averaging somewhere between 200 and 250 km/h, connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, for instance, in about three hours.
Like all JR trains, the Shinkansen have snack and gift carts, and extremely clean restrooms with separate wash rooms; unique to the Shinkansen are in-train telephones.
Each Shinkansen has its own name; for instance, between Tokyo and Hachinohe we took the Shinkansen Hayate (in English, “Whirlwind”), which is a pretty neat name for a bullet train.

Hachinohe (八戸) [1], a mid sized city in Aomori, is the current terminus of the Tohoku Shinkansen line and mainly a train hub for most travellers.
Hayate trains from Tokyo reach Hachinohe in three hours and cost ¥15350 each way, so it might be wise to get a rail pass of some kind before making the journey.
Beware that the Hayate trains are coupled to Akita-bound Komachi trains, which split at Morioka, so be sure you're in the right train and car when boarding.

Ministry denies ordering Japan bullet trains
Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported on Monday that China is moving closer to placing an order with a Japanese consortium for 60 high-speed trains for a new railway system after doing the same with a German group earlier this month.
The Japanese high-speed trains will be modelled after East Japan Railway Co's "Hayate" Shinkansen trains, and their orders will be placed with the six-company group, including Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, the Japanese news agency quoted an anonymous industry source as saying.
China is preparing for the construction of 2,000 kilometres of high-speed rails by 2020, and competition for the projects is becoming increasingly fierce among Japan's Shinkansen, France's TGV and Germany's ICE trains with the most advanced high-speed rail technology available in the world.
