Fry made his biggest impact on college football off the field when he broke the color barrier in the Southwest Conference by recruiting receiver Jerry Levias to SMU in 1965.
Fry was the head coach and AD for six years (1973-78) at North Texas, taking an ailing program and making it a big winner (33-11) his final four years.
Fry was a player-coach with the Quantico Marines (reaching the rank of captain).

The newspaper reported Monday that the 70-year-old Fry has undergone treatment within the past three months for the ailment that was discovered this spring, but Fry is remaining secretive about it.
The newspaper said former Iowa State basketball coach Johnny Orr, an old friend of Fry's, told a group attending a charity event he hosted Saturday that the former Iowa football coach is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.
Fry was scheduled to appear at the golf event and was forced to cancel because of the ailment, Orr said.
