Abbey: Hayduke Lives!: A Novel - Bøger
And then there is George Washington Hayduke III...this former Green Beret will not stop until he gets to the bottom of who is messing with his desert; and he intends to put a stop to it.
For all that "The Monkey Wrench Gang" inspired a generation of environmentalists, "Hayduke Lives" is Abbey's critique of the fourteen years that come in between.
In "Hayduke Lives!," the sequel to that book, Edward Abbey returns to those characters and tries to stir them up to action once again, this time with the threat of a giant bulldozer about to destroy a beautiful canyon.

Ed Abbey's 1975 novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang, ended with a classic--and literal--cliffhanger: it left its hero, George Washington Hayduke III, clinging to a sheer rock face in the wilds of Utah as an armed posse hunted him down for his eco-radicalist crimes.
His actual landscape at the last, which was also the landscape of "Hayduke Lives!", was the canyon lands and desert country of Arizona and Utah (and everywhere).
Hayduke's stunts are the most outrageous Ed has cooked up by far.

 Hayduke Lives!
In Edward Abbey's critically acclaimed bestseller, The Monkey Wrench Gang, George Washington Hayduke -- ex-Green Beret and "wilderness avenger, industrial development saboteur, night-time trouble-maker, barroom brawler, free-time lover" -- was last seen clinging to a cliff, under fire from both a helicopter and a posse.
Seducing each out of his of her comfortable life, Hayduke reunites his gang this last time, and, along with the mysterious fl-masked (sometimes sunglassed) horseman, they take on the establishment to topple GOLIATH, the world's largest mobile earth-moving machine, now carving its way through the desert.

Tim Hope's Thesis on Edward Abbey
And at the end of Hayduke Lives!, GOLIATH, the Giant Earth Mover, is forced over a canyon rim and falls, with its "spider eyes" still blinking, down to the canyon floor (268).
In George Hayduke's fantasy, however, the cities, once gone, will become a place where "sunflowers push up through the concrete and asphalt of the forgotten freeways," and where "the Kremlin and the Pentagon are turned into nursing homes for generals, presidents and other such shit heads" (Abbey 1992b, 88-89).
Thus, the value of machines and property is considerably higher than the lives of people, and in the novels the disparity of the penalties for damaging machines and damaging people is significant.

I found George Hayduke, a Vietnam War veteran, a member of the Special Forces, the most loveable of the four.
On the surface, he appeared to be a strange man: inordinately hairy, bearded, unkempt, sloppy, almost derelict looking, he lived by his wits and his natural intelligence.
Haydukes earthiness, his liberal use of foul language, to the constant dismay of one of the gang, gave him an extremely funny, if, somewhat "psychopathic" persona.
