Dennis Hayes (born 1950) was the founder of Hayes Communications, a maker of modems mostly known for introducing the Hayes command set which has subsequently been used in most modems produced to this day.
While Heatherington left the company early to retire, Hayes ran the company until it filed for bankruptcy in 1998 when the technology was incorporated into the products of competitors.
The de la Haye family was a Norman family which came over with the retinue of William the Bastard (aka William the Conqueror) and settled in lowland Scotland and intermarried with the indigenous Scottish population.

Adam Rosi-Kessel’s text message today asking me, for various reasons, to look up the Hayes command set, reminds me of the good old days.
I used to know all about those Hayes commands; I think they were largely Greek to me at the time, looking at them now I don’t remember understanding the bit about registers, and overall I was just twiddling knobs that I didn’t really understand.
Were I using a modem now, I think I’d have no problem hacking around with Hayes commands.
