Hays County is named for John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger and Mexican-American War officer.
As of 2004, there are there are two high schools (Hays and Lehmann), three middle schools (Dahlstrom, Kyle, and Green), and seven elementary schools.
One of the middle schools is Dahlstrom Middle School, located on the outskirts of Buda, Texas.

Southwest Texas Normal School was authorized at the turn of the century and opened in 1903 as a teacher-training institution; it became Southwest Texas State University in 1969.
