Hays County is named for John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger and Mexican-American War officer.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 20.50% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

Hays County (K-14) occupies an area of 693.5 square miles in south central Texas; the center of the county is at 98°00' west longitude and 30°00' north latitude, twenty-three miles southwest of Austin.
County organization and the designation of San Marcos as county seat gave impetus to settlement; the population grew from 387 in 1850 to 2,126 in 1860.
Southwest Texas Normal School was authorized at the turn of the century and opened in 1903 as a teacher-training institution; it became Southwest Texas State University in 1969.

In addition, he was elected sheriff of San Francisco County in 1850, appointed United States surveyor general for California in 1853, became one of the founders of the city of Oakland, and ran successful enterprises in real estate and ranching.
Hays died on April 21, 1883, and is buried in California.

The records of local undertakers are of very little help in determining some of the names, because in the early days of the cemetery, African Americans were often identified in mortuary records by nothing more than their race, sex, and cost of their funeral.
The Civil Statutes of the State of Texas, volume 7A, Article 2351f, Section 1, shows that Commissioners Courts of the counties of this State are hereby authorized to spend moneys in the general fund for the purpose of maintenance and upkeep of public cemeteries in their respective counties.
This writer went before the County Judge and the Commissioners and gave each one a copy of the Civil Statutes, reminding them of their obligation to keep that historic cemetery cleaned and looking good at all times.

Calling Hayes a "high-growth" county, Roddy says the combination of new home building, lower mortgage approval standards, and a tepid market have kept the area's foreclosures higher than that of neighboring counties.
Rounding out the Austin metro area are Travis and Williamson counties, each of which saw their foreclosure numbers decrease during the first quarter.
