haywire. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.
Haywire is a compound of the words hay and wire, originally simply denoting wire used to bale hay or straw.
The term is first recorded as a noun in a debate in the Canadian House of Commons (1917), so it is a Canadianism or, since it appeared soon thereafter in a U.S. publication, a North Americanism.
Haywire is found in other contexts with the general sense “makeshift, inefficient,” from which come the extended senses “not functioning properly” and “crazy.”

 Haywire |
Haywire is a rock band that was formed in 2004 by drummer/guitarist Charlie Glick and singer/guitarist Cody Martin.
At first Haywire had plans to become a punk band, but soon Charlie and Cody discovered Led Zeppelin, and got sucked into the world of classic rock, which obviously has an influence over Haywire now.
Haywire's first recording was an original jam titled "Saturday Night Jam" which is now a drum feature for Charlie.

CD Baby: STATE OF BEING: Haywire
Just the way in which the grinding guitars form the backbone of most of the songs here brings the alternative rock influences to mind here, but the generous synth element that is blended and mixed with the songs shows that State Of Being is more than your standard alt-rock band.
"Haywire" is the most overtly synth-laden of the tracks, but they all temper the rocking guitars to some degree with synths.
"Haywire" has also produced their catchiest songs to date: 'Levity' and the title song, 'Haywire', which, along with the bombastic 'Overload', kicks the disc off in full gear with choruses you'll be singing for days.

Haywire's music consisted of a clean, hard pop sound with just the right amount of keyboards to keep them on the radio from the mid- to late '80s.
Haywire made Don't Just Stand There their strongest release, with tracks like "Dance Desire" and "Black and Blue" draped in rhythms led by rather unsophisticated guitar and keyboard riffs and a bubblegum rock savoir faire aimed at a teenage crowd.
Produced by Brian Allen, the album's songs are mainly about breaking up and breaking out, and although the manufactured angst is a bit facetious, the songs aren't without some contagious merit.

The Mavens' Word of the Day   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Haywire was used, especially in logging camps, to refer to any substandard thing, or a poorly equipped outfit.
The use probably combines two ideas: the use of haywire for makeshift repairs, thus signifying any broken-down or defective thing, and, less prominently, the use of haywire in place of a heavier wire, thus suggesting cheapness and low quality.
Though the word haywire in the literal sense 'light baling wire' is first recorded in 1917, the expression haywire outfit 'poorly equipped logging company' is found in 1905, suggesting that the literal haywire is older still, but unrecorded in print or undiscovered by lexicographers until later.

By the time guitarist and singer Chris LeDoux completed this album, Haywire, he had already seen the release of more than two-dozen others -- impressive enough -- but he doesn't show any sign of slowing in his career.
The songs on Haywire are mostly what is common LeDoux cowboy country-style, done the way he does it best.
Since he is a real cowboy -- he spent time riding in the rodeo and became a champion bareback rider -- maybe he just has a better feel for the subject matter than many singers, and it comes through in his voice.
