At the age of 19, Haywood was the leader scorer on the USA's gold medal winning basketball team during the 1968 Olympics.
At the University of Detroit, Haywood led the NCAA in rebounding with a 19.5 average per game while scoring 32.1 points per game during the 1968-69 season.

The City’s position is that irrespective of any SWAT Team issues relating to Sgt. Haywood, his actions at the Altug’s home on April 19, 2001 were provoked by an unstable and dangerous individual, who refused to drop a dangerous weapon who was ordered to so multiple times.
Based on the settlement demand along those lines, the City was fully prepared to defend itself against what it viewed as completely meritless claims and it made this position clear to Sgt. Haywood’s attorney.
