Guardian Unlimited Politics | Special Reports | The Guardian profile: Hazel Blears MP
When Hazel Blears was first elected an MP in 1997 some London barrister colleagues at Westminster could scarcely conceal their disdain for the diminutive solicitor from Salford whose bubbly enthusiasms seemed to out-Blair Tony Blair's.
Eight years on Ms Blears, now 49, is a recognisable starlet in the government firmament, minister of state in charge at the Home Office during Charles Clarke's absence on holiday, a combative defender of government policy on radio and TV.
Blears is thus as much a Blunkett Babe as a Blair Babe, like Beverley Hughes, a Lancashire councillor spotted and nurtured by their Sheffield council colleague.

Hazel Blears, the minister responsible for counter-terrorism, said yesterday that Muslims will have to accept as a "reality" that they will be stopped and searched by the police more often than the rest of the public.
