Hexen II requires DirectX but it doesn't use Direct3D but OpenGL instead, which is a set of drivers 3D card developers are really pushing forward, some even say it has surpassed Direct3D, at least in the first-person perspective genre.
Hexen II also features incredibly realistic lighting since the light entities are true 3d object spawning a radius which is affected by the light's intensity.
This makes Hexen II modem-to-modem playable, but the problem is that one player would still be the server, the other would still be the client, and the one who is the client is going to have about some lag while the server has zero lag.

Hexen is also very interactive, enabling players to destroy certain parts of a world, like mirrors inside castles and trees outside.
Hexen's levels, unlike those of Doom, must be traveled through a number of times, so back-tracking is a necessity.
Hexen seems less of a multiplayer experience and more of a single-player one, as the level design is filled with "etheral travel," which constantly interrupts multiplayer games.

 Review: Hexen 2 - Part 2
The single player option of Hexen 2 is fun, with more attention to solving actual "puzzles" (or as close to puzzles as an action game is going to get), than just charging around slicing everything you see.
In multiplayer, I wouldn't say that Hexen 2 is as fun as Quake (absolutely nothing beats launching a rocket down a hall and watching several people turn into gibblets at the other end), it still is action-packed, although paced somewhat differently than most chaotic Quake games.
In conclusion, while in my humble opinion, Hexen 2 isn't as good as a game as Quake, it still is very fun, and a great way to show off the abilities of your new 3dfx graphics card, or a fast processor.

Make no mistake: Hexen II is a game with many strengths - its design is superior to the original Hexen, it has a significant payoff for single players winding through its twisted corridors, and visually it is without equal in the action genre.
Like Hexen, Hexen II is divided into "hubs," groups of interconnected levels that are intended to break up the monotonous "kill monsters, find key, open door, kill some more" design of typical first-person shooters.
Hexen two is just fantastic though, it crosses several interesting worlds ranging from egypt to medieval.

To put it into a few words, Hexen 2 is a souped up version of Quake.
Getting down to the nitty-gritty, Hexen 2, the sequel to Hexen, which in turn was the sequel to Heretic, continues the theme of battling it out against evil demons in an ancient time, and with a lot of cool ancient weapons to boot.
But the one big difference is that Hexen 2 uses an engine designed by a little company called ID software and which was used for a little-known game called Quake.
