Topic: Head Lake, Ontario

  Ontario - LoveToKnow 1911
From Lake Temiscaming northwards the boundary is the meridian of 79° 30'.
As the lakes never freeze, the prevalent cold north-west winds of North America are warmed in their passage over them, and often much of the winter precipitation is in the form of rain, so that the weather has much less certainty than in the north.
Ontario is thus pre-eminently an agricultural province, though the growth of manufactures has increased the importance of the towns and cities, and many of the farmers are seeking new homes in the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

 Lake Ontario - LoveToKnow 1911
The Niagara river is the main feeder of the lake; the other largest rivers emptying into the lake are the Genesee, Oswego and Black from the south side, and the Trent, which discharges into the upper end of the bay of Quinte, a picturesque inlet 70 m.
The lake never freezes over, and is less obstructed by ice than the other lakes, but the harbours are closed by ice from about the middle of December to the middle of April.
It accommodates vessels 255 ft. in length, with a draught of 14 ft. The Murray canal, opened for traffic on the 14th of April 1890, extends from Presqu'ile bay, on the north of the lake, to the head of the bay of Quinte, and enables vessels to avoid 70 m.

Lake Michigan is especially susceptible to toxic pollution.
The Alliance for the Great Lakes is vitally concerned with children's health for their sake and because, if we protect their health, which is more vulnerable than most people's, general public health is more likely to be shielded from the effects of toxic contaminants.
For example, children of mothers who ate Lake Michigan fish contaminated with PCBs may be born with smaller head circumferences, lower IQs, and memory and behavioral problems, among others.

This news comes at a time where some of Lake Ontario's native species -- the deepwater sculpin, the emerald shiner and the threespined stickleback -- seem to be on the comeback trail.
