However, in contrast to the cassette heads, which make contact with the tape while they are recording or playing back music or speech, the disk heads "fly" a few millionths of an inch away from the platters, which rotate at very high velocity in a vacuum.
In the case of the disk, the head has to be moved to the right track (an operation known as a seek), and then we have to wait for the platter to spin so that the region we want to access is under the head (called rotational delay).
The heads have to be as close as possible to the platters because the influence of a magnet (called the magnetic field) drops off very rapidly with distance.

Head On Crash?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
If the ship had hit the berg head on, it almost certainly would not have suffered damage to the critical fifth watertight compartment, and would have stayed afloat.
The irony is that to have let the ship hit the berg head on would have constituted gross negligence on the part of the crew, and the owners would have been outraged.
Of course, no one thought such a disastrous accident could happen to such a technologically advanced ship (which it was, even by modern standards, and, except for the lack of lifeboats, was safer than many ships afloat today).

Last week we had a hard drive crash on an IBM Death Star which was in one of the Virgo servers.
I had not had a chance to migrate that machine yet to TSM at the time of the crash, and was asked to see if we could determine the cause of the crash, as well as to determine if it would be possible to recover any of the data on the drive.
It appears that the head crash scrubbed the drive so clean that the magnetic substrate has been wiped clean off the platters.

Howstuffworks "What does it mean when a hard disk has a "head crash"?"
To the head, the platter seems to be moving at about 150 mph, and a very thin cushion of air forms between the head and the platter so that the head "flies" over the platter.
If even the smallest bit of dust makes its way onto the platter, the flight is disrupted and the head " crashes " into the platter, scratching it.
The crash, of course, sprays a lot more dust and debris onto the platter and then it's all over.

Two thing that they could do to improve crash testing is (1) to reinforce the area where the front tire hits the cab and (2) Make the doors more secure so they don't pop open, that would significantly increase crash worthiness because those doors are so beefy.
But there's even less chance of a Mini hitting head-on with anything, unless the Mini was parked or there was a game of chicken going on and both drivers were too macho for their own good.
In addition, officials say that while frontal crashes are very demanding on safety restraint systems—owing to the rapid deceleration of a vehicle's occupants in such crashes—offset testing places the most burden on the structural integrity of a vehicle's passenger compartment.
