Welcome to the BR Headcode Website - Home
The decision to cease the display of Headcodes was based mainly on grounds of cost, both of materials required in the shape of replacement blinds and the cost of maintenance including the time stock spent out of service on account of such maintenance.
In 1976 there was much negative comment made about the loss of Headcodes, as they were used extensively by photographers to identify trains, plus operating staff and crews made use of them.
Headcodes were, however, deemed by the Traffic department to be simply an operating requirement and with the advent of more advanced signalling systems and signalling 'power boxes' where the signallers could not actually see the trains, the cost argument won the day.

Train reporting number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A headcode or train reporting number is used by railway staff in Great Britain to identify a particular train service.
Some Train Operating Companies print the headcode on a ticket when cancelling it, for example 1V45 on a cross-country service to Plymouth, or 1F22 on a West Coast London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street train.
Locomotives built in the 1960s and 1970s were equipped with indicator boxes that displayed the headcode on roller blinds for operating staff.

Finally, with the extension of TRUST and the other computer systems in use, the headcodes have been extended to 10 digits, but in everyday use, the familiar 4 digit codes are usually referred to.

Some reviewers -- see links at left -- appear to think that Siratori lives up to the hype, and that his work is extending literature into new avenues, breaking the rules and dragging us kicking and screaming into the future -- I just don't buy it.
If you can explain to me in a rational manner what Headcode tries to convey, without using Siratori-speak -- for this author answers interviewers' questions in the same "meta-language" as he writes in -- please let me know.
